Chapter 45: Collision Course

———
The recording vanished.
The Resonator powered down.
Silence settled over the underground chamber.
Rasheed remained frozen.
His father’s final words echoed through his mind.
“When that day comes… don’t choose me.”
He wanted to reject them.
He couldn’t.
Because they sounded exactly like David Adewale.
⸻
Mr. Vale broke the silence.
“Now you understand.”
Rasheed slowly looked up.
“No.”
“I understand less.”
Vale nodded.
“Good.”
“The truth should make you question everything.”
⸻
Rasheed’s fists clenched.
“You knew about the recording.”
“I suspected.”
“You’ve been leading me here.”
“I’ve been making sure you arrived before someone else.”
⸻
A sharp vibration interrupted them.
Vale reached into his coat.
The bronze compass trembled violently.
Its needle spun so fast it became a blur.
Then…
It snapped toward the tunnel entrance.
“They’re here.”
⸻
Blue lightning exploded through the station.
Omar landed between Rasheed and Vale.
Helmet on.
Electricity dancing around his suit.
“Step away from him.”
Rasheed instinctively took a step back.
Vale remained calm.
“So…”
“The city’s favorite hero.”
⸻
More footsteps echoed behind Omar.
Helix security flooded the tunnel.
Chrona-resistant armor.
Pulse rifles.
Energy shields.
Within seconds…
The Resonator was surrounded.
The Director walked through the formation.
His eyes locked onto the ancient machine.
“So it still exists.”
⸻
Vale smiled.
“You sound relieved.”
“I am.”
“For twenty years…”
“I wasn’t sure whether David had destroyed it.”
⸻
The Director’s gaze shifted to Rasheed.
Then to the Resonator.
Finally…
To Mr. Vale.
“Leave.”
Vale laughed softly.
“You first.”
⸻
The tunnel became unbearably tense.
Three sides.
Three agendas.
No one willing to blink.
⸻
Dr. Sato arrived moments later.
She immediately noticed Rasheed.
Not his face.
The wristwatch.
David’s watch.
For just a second…
Her professional composure cracked.
“Impossible…”
She whispered.
⸻
The Director raised a hand.
Every Helix operative aimed their weapons.
“Secure the Resonator.”
“Detain everyone else.”
⸻
“No.”
The voice came from Omar.
Everyone turned.
The Director frowned.
“What did you say?”
“I said…”
Omar stepped forward.
“…no.”
The Director’s eyes narrowed.
“This isn’t a request.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
Omar looked around the chamber.
“There are civilians above us.”
“If we fight here…”
“…the station collapses.”
Silence.
He wasn’t protecting Rasheed.
He was protecting the people.
Exactly what a hero should do.
⸻
Rasheed noticed.
So did Vale.
Vale smiled to himself.
He’s exactly who David hoped for.
⸻
The Director lowered his hand.
Reluctantly.
“Fall back.”
The Helix operatives hesitated.
Then obeyed.
One by one…
They withdrew.
Only Omar remained.
⸻
As the others disappeared…
The Director looked directly at Rasheed.
“You won’t stay hidden forever.”
Then he left.
⸻
Now…
Only three people remained.
Rasheed.
Omar.
Mr. Vale.
⸻
Omar removed his helmet.
For the first time…
The two teenage speedsters stood face-to-face without masks between them.
Recognition flashed across both their faces.
“…You.”
Rasheed blinked.
“Omar.”
Neither had expected it.
The quiet student.
The famous hero.
Standing in the same forgotten station.
⸻
“So…”
Omar said slowly.
“It was you.”
“The hooded guy.”
Rasheed let out a nervous laugh.
“And you were Velocyte.”
“I guess we’ve both been terrible at keeping secrets.”
For the first time…
They actually smiled.
⸻
Mr. Vale watched the exchange carefully.
Then spoke.
“I’ll give you one piece of advice.”
Both boys looked at him.
“The world is about to ask you to choose sides.”
He paused.
“Don’t.”
⸻
Before either could respond…
The bronze compass shattered.
Without warning.
Glass exploded.
Bronze fragments scattered across the chamber floor.
A deafening pulse erupted from its center.
Every light in the station died.
For one impossible second…
The world turned crimson.
Rasheed.
Omar.
Vale.
All three saw the same vision.
A colossal figure standing within the Chronal Zone.
Its body seemed woven from living darkness and fractured time.
Its eyes burned like dying stars.
Behind it…
Countless floating ruins drifted through an endless crimson sky.
Then…
It looked directly at them.
Not through the vision.
At them.
As if it could see across worlds.
A voice echoed inside their minds.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Ancient.
“The Gate remembers.”
The vision shattered.
The station returned.
The compass…
Had turned to dust.
Mr. Vale’s face had lost all color.
For the first time since Rasheed met him…
He looked afraid.
He whispered only three words.
“…He’s awake.”
