Chapter 44: The Resonator

1 week ago · 4 min read

———

The crimson glow spread along the abandoned railway tracks.

One rail.

Then another.

Until the entire tunnel pulsed like a living heartbeat.

Rasheed didn’t move.

Neither did Mr. Vale.

The air itself felt charged.

Ancient.

Waiting.

“The Resonator is waking,” Vale said quietly.

Rasheed kept his eyes on him.

“You knew it was here.”

“I helped build it.”

The words landed like a hammer.

“What?”

Vale looked toward the glowing rails.

“Not with my hands.”

“With my silence.”

The tunnel trembled.

Concrete cracked overhead.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Hidden mechanisms that had slept for decades slowly began to turn.

Deep beneath the tracks…

Massive gears rotated for the first time in twenty years.

“You keep talking like you were there.”

“I was.”

“Were you part of Project Chrona?”

Vale smiled.

“No.”

“I arrived after the accident.”

“Someone had to bury the truth.”

Before Rasheed could ask another question—

The Chrona Radio burst to life.

Static screamed through the tunnel.

David’s voice struggled through the interference.

“…don’t…”

“…activate…”

“…the…”

The signal died.

Vale’s expression changed.

For the first time…

He looked genuinely concerned.

“That’s earlier than I expected.”

“What is?”

“He shouldn’t be able to reach this side so often.”

Rasheed stepped closer.

“You keep saying ‘shouldn’t.’”

Vale met his eyes.

“Because every time David contacts this world…”

“…something on the other side hears him.”

Silence.

Even the glowing rails seemed to dim.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…”

Vale’s voice lowered.

“…your father isn’t alone.”

Before Rasheed could react—

A violent shockwave erupted through the station.

BOOM!

The force threw both men backward.

The tunnel lights exploded.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Then…

A single crimson beam erupted from beneath the tracks.

It shot upward through layers of rock.

Through streets.

Through buildings.

Into the night sky.

Across the entire city…

People stopped walking.

Cars pulled over.

Children pointed upward.

A pillar of red light pierced the clouds.

At Helix Dynamics…

Every alarm activated at once.

CHRONA RESONANCE EVENT DETECTED.

LEVEL: UNKNOWN.

The Director stared at the live satellite feed.

“No…”

Dr. Sato whispered.

“The Resonator.”

Omar was already running.

Blue lightning exploded through the city streets.

He had never seen Helix this afraid.

Inside the bookstore…

The shelves shook violently.

Books crashed to the floor.

Elias grabbed the edge of the counter.

His face drained of color.

“They’ve awakened it…”

He immediately rushed toward the hidden chamber beneath the store.

The city model glowed brightly.

Not just one Vault.

Not two.

Every Vault shimmered faintly.

Connected.

Like stars forming a constellation.

Back at the station…

The crimson beam slowly faded.

Silence returned.

Rasheed climbed to his feet.

His ears rang.

His vision blurred.

He looked toward the center of the tracks.

The old stone floor had split open.

A circular chamber lay beneath.

Hidden for decades.

At its center…

A machine waited.

Unlike anything Rasheed had ever seen.

Bronze.

Silver.

Covered in intricate Chrona symbols.

It resembled neither modern technology nor ancient machinery.

It felt…

Timeless.

The Resonator.

Mr. Vale stood beside him.

Neither reached for it.

Finally…

Vale spoke.

“Your father built this…”

“…for the day someone worthy would find it.”

Rasheed stepped toward the machine.

The Pulse Core hidden beneath his jacket suddenly flared.

Bright crimson light surged through the chamber.

The Resonator answered.

Ancient rings began rotating around its center.

A deep hum echoed through the tunnel.

Then—

A holographic recording appeared.

David.

Younger.

Wearing his laboratory coat.

He looked directly ahead.

As though speaking to whoever found the machine.

“If you’re seeing this…”

“…then I wasn’t able to come home.”

Rasheed froze.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know whether you’re my son…”

“…or someone brave enough to carry this burden.”

He smiled.

“If it’s you, Rasheed…”

“…I’m sorry.”

The apology hit harder than any explosion.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t there to watch you grow.”

“I’m sorry your mother had to carry this alone.”

“I’m sorry…”

“…you had to inherit my mistakes.”

Rasheed’s eyes filled.

David took a slow breath.

“But if you’ve reached the Resonator…”

“…then you’ve already proven you’re stronger than I ever was.”

The image flickered.

“Listen carefully.”

“The Resonator is not a doorway.”

“It is a bridge.”

“It can connect two worlds…”

“…but only if both sides choose to cross.”

The recording began to fade.

“There will come a day…”

“…when you’ll have one chance to bring me home.”

David’s smile returned.

“When that day comes…”

“…don’t choose me.”

The message ended.

The chamber fell silent.

Rasheed couldn’t breathe.

His father…

Had just asked him not to save him.

Far away…

Within the endless crimson horizon of the Chronal Zone…

David slowly lowered his head.

As if…

He had somehow felt the recording finish.

Behind him…

The unseen figure watched from the storm.

“You still believe he’ll listen to you.”

David smiled sadly.

“I didn’t raise him…”

“…to choose the easy answer.”
