Chapter 46: Four Hours

———
The underground station had fallen silent.
Only the ancient Resonator remained alive.
Its bronze rings turned slowly.
Each rotation released a low hum that echoed through the forgotten tunnels.
At its center…
A crimson countdown glowed.
03:59:59
No one moved.
No one breathed.
⸻
Rasheed looked from the timer to Mr. Vale.
“What is it counting down to?”
Vale didn’t answer.
For the first time since they’d met…
He genuinely didn’t want to.
⸻
The timer continued.
03:59:58
03:59:57
⸻
Omar stepped beside Rasheed.
“I asked you a question.”
Vale kept his eyes fixed on the machine.
“You won’t like the answer.”
“Try me.”
⸻
Before he could speak—
Footsteps thundered through the tunnel.
Someone was running.
Fast.
“Elias?”
Rasheed turned.
The Librarian burst into the chamber, breathing heavily.
His coat was soaked from the rain.
His glasses had slipped halfway down his face.
He wasn’t looking at Rasheed.
He wasn’t looking at Omar.
His eyes locked onto the countdown.
The color drained from his face.
“…No.”
⸻
Rasheed rushed toward him.
“You know what this is?”
Elias didn’t answer immediately.
He slowly approached the Resonator.
His hands trembled.
After several seconds…
He whispered,
“I prayed this day would never come.”
⸻
“What does it mean?”
Elias closed his eyes.
“The Chronal Zone doesn’t experience time the way we do.”
“It experiences…”
“…opportunities.”
⸻
Neither teenager understood.
Elias pointed toward the timer.
“Every few decades…”
“The barrier separating our worlds weakens.”
“When it does…”
“A crossing becomes possible.”
⸻
Rasheed’s heart pounded.
“You mean…”
“My father can come home?”
Silence.
Elias looked at him with heartbreaking honesty.
“I don’t know.”
⸻
Mr. Vale finally spoke.
“But someone can.”
⸻
The words echoed through the chamber.
Someone.
Not necessarily David.
⸻
Omar folded his arms.
“So whoever reaches the crossing first…”
“…gets through.”
Vale nodded once.
“Exactly.”
⸻
Rasheed immediately took a step toward the Resonator.
“I’m bringing my father back.”
“No.”
Both Elias and Vale answered at the same time.
⸻
Rasheed stared at them.
“What?”
Elias’s voice shook.
“You heard David.”
“He told you not to.”
“My father also spent twenty years trapped!”
Rasheed shouted.
“You expect me to leave him there?”
⸻
No one answered.
Because no one had a good answer.
⸻
Vale finally broke the silence.
“Listen carefully.”
“If David reaches the crossing…”
“He still has to survive it.”
“If something else reaches it first…”
“It enters our world instead.”
⸻
“…Something else?”
Vale nodded.
“The Chronal Zone has changed.”
“What lives there now…”
“…isn’t what entered.”
⸻
The timer continued.
03:48:19
⸻
Deep inside Helix Dynamics…
The Director stood before an enormous digital map.
Every Vault glowed.
Lines of crimson energy connected them beneath the city.
Dr. Sato entered quietly.
“The Resonator is active.”
“I know.”
“The countdown has started.”
“I know.”
She hesitated.
“Should we tell them?”
The Director looked at David’s old personnel file.
“No.”
“They’ll choose emotion.”
“We have to choose humanity.”
⸻
Back beneath the station…
Rasheed turned toward Omar.
“I don’t care what anyone says.”
“If there’s even a chance…”
“I’m taking it.”
Omar didn’t answer immediately.
Instead…
He asked a question.
“If it was your mother trapped over there…”
“And bringing her back meant risking millions of lives…”
“What would she tell you to do?”
Rasheed opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he already knew.
She would make the same choice David did.
⸻
The realization hurt.
⸻
Suddenly—
The Resonator emitted a piercing tone.
Its rings began spinning faster.
Ancient symbols spread across the floor like glowing roots.
The countdown froze.
03:42:00
Stopped.
Everyone stared.
Then…
The machine spoke.
Not with David’s voice.
Not with static.
With a voice no one had ever heard before.
Calm.
Ancient.
Genderless.
“Crossing request acknowledged.”
The chamber shook.
“One traveler seeks passage.”
Rasheed’s pulse quickened.
The voice continued.
“Identity… concealed.”
Omar instinctively stepped in front of Rasheed.
Vale’s grip tightened around his silver cane.
Even Elias looked terrified.
The Resonator paused.
Then delivered the sentence that froze every heart in the room.
“Authorization required…”
”…from the Guardian of the Pulse.”
Every eye turned toward Rasheed.
The Pulse Core beneath his jacket erupted with crimson light.
For the first time…
It wasn’t responding to danger.
It was waiting…
For his decision.
