Chapter 216: Corpse Eater Cardinal

5 days ago · 8 min read

"He actually surrendered?" Qi Suian was genuinely surprised.

’By all rights, a... well, I’m not sure what he is yet, but with Level 2 bionic armor, he should be able to dominate the entire wasteland.’

’So when faced with the Floating Cannons, he shouldn’t have surrendered so decisively. He should’ve been thinking he was just as strong and tried to fight.’

’Cowering and surrendering on the spot like this was definitely not part of my plan.’

His original plan was just to kill him, but now, it seemed things had changed.

[Perhaps he’s trying to trick you, waiting for you to arrive before he strikes.]

[After all, destroying a few Floating Cannons is of little consequence to you.]

"A feigned surrender. That’s a real possibility." Qi Suian thought, ’If you can’t win, you surrender, then wait for the main player to show up before making your move.’

’Wiping everyone out in one go is much better than destroying a bunch of Floating Cannons that are obviously just drones.’

"Still, I’ll go take a look. It might be some kind of opportunity."

"My protagonist’s aura is already helping this much; it’d be a shame to ignore it." Qi Suian wasn’t too worried about his own safety.

’With fifty-six Floating Cannons on site, worst-case scenario, I’ll just kill the others first and then have them all lock onto him.’

’When you have to take a risk, you take it. Otherwise, you’re just waiting for pies to fall from the sky, which is impossible.’

’Wanting a shortcut with no repercussions? There’s no such thing.’

’In this world, trying to have your cake and eat it too might seem like a win on the surface, but the truth is, free things are always the most expensive.’

’If I really obtained an opportunity with little to no risk, I’d have to wonder—is there some deeper scheme behind this?’

The Tai Sui God brought Qi Suian swiftly toward the target’s location. Soon, he saw the Corpse Eater Cardinal who called himself Hayman.

"You’re a pureblood?" The speaker was stunned to see the newcomer, but quickly realized. "No, you’re that mutant named Jack."

’Purebloods would never come to save mutants, let alone when there are Corpse Eaters here.’

’If they did run into this situation, they’d most likely just open fire, not stick around.’

"Jack? You’re not dead?" Kemp looked astonished. It had been so difficult for them to escape, let alone for Qi Suian.

He had charged straight in. From Kemp and Cummings’s perspective, he should have been deader than dead.

Deep down, they all believed mutants were no match for purebloods. And in fact, that was true.

So for Qi Suian to return alive was particularly jarring.

Qi Suian, however, completely ignored the two of them, his gaze fixed on Hayman.

"Mutant? Pureblood?" Qi Suian looked at the man, discovering he possessed a mutant’s regenerative abilities, could wear a pureblood’s combat armor, and also had off-the-charts radiation levels in his body.

"He’s a Corpse Eater! Use your weapons to kill him, quick!" Cummings shouted immediately.

"Can you tell me what a Corpse Eater is?" Qi Suian asked.

"A group of purebloods who were kicked out of a Sanctuary. The radiation pollution turned them into monsters that are neither human nor ghost."

"They need to consume mutants and purebloods to sustain themselves. It’s an organization they formed, huddling together for warmth and self-preservation."

"Just like the Steel Brotherhood," Hayman spoke up, offering his own explanation.

Hearing this, Qi Suian just nodded. "I see."

He didn’t ask why they needed to consume mutants and purebloods to live, nor did he ask for intel on the Corpse Eater Organization.

To Qi Suian, none of that mattered. Knowing wouldn’t change anything.

’It just means one more type of fuel.’

Hayman’s strength was not to be underestimated; within the Corpse Eater Organization, he was at least second only to the leader.

"Hand it over," Qi Suian said.

"Huh?" Hayman was a bit lost.

He didn’t understand what Qi Suian meant at all.

’After all, it’s a sentence with no beginning or end. Even if you want me to hand something over, there has to be some context, right?’

"It seems you’ve chosen the hard way." Qi Suian stated this lightly, and the Floating Cannons attacked.

Except for Hayman, all the other Corpse Eaters were disintegrated by the Dark Energy Beams.

Hayman’s expression turned ugly as he watched this scene unfold.

In his eyes, this Qi Suian person had no logic whatsoever, killing at the drop of a hat. He was practically a born Corpse Eater.

’It’s a shame mutants can’t become Corpse Eaters, or I’d definitely find a way to make Qi Suian one of our own.’

"I won’t ask a third time. I already gave you one chance. You’d better take this one."

"Just hand it over, and we can talk," Qi Suian continued.

As for what to hand over? Qi Suian didn’t know either. He was simply making things difficult for the other party, with no other thought in mind.

’But if Hayman really does take out something that tempts me, well, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.’

This was a case of casting a wide net to see what he might catch. As for the opportunity, he didn’t necessarily have to obtain it; destroying it was just as good.

At Qi Suian’s words, Hayman immediately fell silent.

Seeing his expression, Qi Suian cursed inwardly, ’Holy shit, you actually have something good on you.’

To be honest, his own control over his expression was not up to par. It was a good thing the Tai Sui God’s faceplate concealed it, or he would have given himself away.

"The Fire Seed from the former Level 1 Beast King Sanctuary... you want to get your hands on it too?" A mocking smile appeared on Hayman’s face. "I don’t know how you found out, but let me give you a piece of advice: this is not a realm you should be meddling in."

Hearing this, Qi Suian’s face lit up with a joy he couldn’t contain.

’See? This is the power of a protagonist’s aura.’

’Whatever I lack, it just appears. As long as I can seize the opportunity, my growth will be incredibly fast.’

In fact, he suspected the reason things were going so smoothly was likely due to the "Strong Luck" and "High-Speed Growth" traits of his protagonist aura, Celestial Fate: Profound, working in tandem.

After all, growth in this world depended on external objects, and Qi Suian’s understanding of Fire Seeds was enough to trigger the High-Speed Growth effect.

But because Qi Suian didn’t have a Fire Seed Armor, there was no way to implement this High-Speed Growth. Then, Strong Luck made its entrance, saying: ’Let me help you with that!’

The Beast King Sanctuary was one of the Sanctuaries that had already been destroyed.

Qi Suian had thought that this type of Fire Seed would all be controlled by the six victorious Sanctuaries, but he never expected one to be out in the wild.

This was truly a significant opportunity. It was a good thing he hadn’t killed Hayman outright, or things would have become very troublesome later.

Among animals, the one generally recognized as the "King of Hundred Beasts" is the tiger.

What Qi Suian lacked now was not just any module, but a module that could provide a tiger form.

"That’s not for you to worry about," Qi Suian said indifferently. "Hand it over, and you can leave."

He was indeed ruthless and unscrupulous, but he wasn’t so moronic as to bluntly say something like "Hand it over and I’ll grant you the mercy of a complete corpse."

’Even if I’m going to kill him, I have to let him hand over the item first before I make a move.’

"I don’t have it on me. If you want..." Hayman didn’t believe Qi Suian’s words at all, so he began to argue.

"Then forget it. I don’t want it anymore." Coincidentally, Qi Suian didn’t believe Hayman either and prepared to strike before the other man could even finish speaking.

Hayman’s heart sank. ’You really don’t play by the rules.’ He immediately and decisively blurted out, "It’s on me."

He offered no explanation, simply and concisely retracting his previous statement, afraid he was a second too late.

For no other reason than the fact that the Floating Cannons were already charging up.

’Qi Suian really would dare to kill me.’

’Lunatic, an absolute lunatic!’ Hayman cursed Qi Suian inwardly after seeing the Floating Cannons power down.

He dreaded meeting this kind of unreasonable person who would attack at a moment’s notice.

"Think before you speak."

"I don’t necessarily need your Level 1 Fire Seed, but you definitely need your life."

"As my captive, if you try to bargain with me again, I’ll just kill you."

"Now, hand it over," Qi Suian warned Hayman.

Hayman didn’t speak. He took out the Level 1 Fire Seed: King of Hundred Beasts and tossed it onto the ground in front of him.

"Quite the clever little tricks you have. Take off the Level 2 bionic armor as well," Qi Suian continued.

’He places the Level 1 Fire Seed on the ground in front of him. Then, when I go over and bend down to pick it up, he’ll launch a surprise attack.’

’That wouldn’t be so easy for the Tai Sui God to dodge.’

’So, as long as I make him take off the Level 2 bionic armor he relies on, then I’ll... take the armor first, and then have him toss the Level 1 Fire Seed over.’

’Then, when Hayman bends down to pick it up, I’ll launch a surprise attack on him.’

’Why wouldn’t I? I would never pass up such a good opportunity.’

’I want the Level 1 Fire Seed, I have to get the Level 2 bionic armor, and I’m also very curious about this Corpse Eater, Hayman.’

’So no matter which it is, if I have a chance to get it, I definitely won’t give up.’

"Impossible. Without the Level 2 bionic armor, what if you go back on your promise?" Hayman refused immediately.

"I am a man who values promises above all else. Honesty and integrity are my most outstanding virtues." Of Qi Suian’s short sentence, not a single word could be believed, except for the punctuation.

’Being honest with an enemy? Am I crazy? The more sophisticated way to put it is that all’s fair in war.’

After thinking it over and over, Hayman chose to trust Qi Suian.

He then took off the Level 2 bionic armor, and before he could even put it down, Qi Suian snatched it.

It immediately left his grasp and vanished in Qi Suian’s hands.

Seeing this, a sharp glint flashed in Hayman’s eyes.

At this moment, Qi Suian was incredibly close to him.

He understood that this was his last chance.

His earlier deliberation wasn’t about handing over the Level 2 bionic armor, but about using it as bait. As long as Qi Suian came close, he would attack without hesitation.

He might not have the Level 2 bionic armor, but his body had been injected with an Elder-grade gene-serum, not to mention he still possessed the strength of a mutant.

The attack came in an instant, his heart filling with mounting excitement.

’Capture Qi Suian, threaten those bizarre artificial machines, and the rest will be a clean escape.’

’As for my own things? They’re nothing compared to my life.’

"I’ve been waiting for you to try that," Qi Suian said mockingly.

How could he possibly have let his guard down? This man dared to eat people; there was no way he would submit so easily.
