Chapter 215: It’s Okay If I Can’t Win, The Floating Cannons Can One-Shot Them

5 days ago · 8 min read

’Strange. How did they just vanish en route?’ Qi Suian looked perplexed.

Following the direction projected by the AI, Qi Suian realized he had apparently lost their trail.

He couldn’t find Kemp, Cummings, or the elite members of the Steel Brotherhood.

’That shouldn’t have been possible under normal circumstances.’ He found it baffling. He could understand losing track of one or two people.

But this was a large group; the chances of losing them should have been slim.

In the end, he had no choice but to turn back and search.

And as it turned out, he did find a clue.

’They were intercepted on the way. What’s going on?’ After finding the trail, Qi Suian had the AI run a simulation of the event.

’There wasn’t much of a fight. They were subdued very quickly.’

’It doesn’t look like they were killed. It’s more like they were captured.’

’There were quite a few enemies, and they retreated with extreme speed.’

For a moment, Qi Suian couldn’t figure it out.

But it didn’t matter. As long as there were clues and a trail, he could just have the Tai Sui God follow it.

’This looks like a special organization that targets mutants, equipped with highly efficient capture devices.’

’Aren’t these just purebloods... Oh, wait, no. Purebloods kill on sight; they have no interest in capturing anyone alive.’ Qi Suian’s eyes narrowed.

This turn of events was very sudden.

Qi Suian suspected this was some sort of fated opportunity.

Otherwise, how could he have gotten entangled in it so smoothly?

After all, this wasn’t the first time he’d experienced how fortune and misfortune are intertwined.

Many of the strange situations he’d encountered had forced him to think along these lines.

This mindset had, in fact, led him to seize opportunities before.

’My protagonist halo is right there for the taking. If I ignore it, won’t I miss my chance?’

"These guys are damn fast. To cover this much distance in such a short time..." Qi Suian couldn’t help but curse under his breath.

He suspected they were using some sort of vehicle, like combat armor.

After a long pursuit, he finally caught up to them.

At the edge of his reconnaissance network, the corresponding icons finally appeared.

Qi Suian recognized two of them: Kemp and Cummings.

As for the other mutants, he wasn’t familiar with them, so naturally, he didn’t recognize any.

As he drew closer, the reconnaissance network’s scans became more detailed, and it began to generate reports.

[Initial Observation: Kidnappers are a third category of lifeform, between pureblood and mutant, possessing...]

After a quick glance, Qi Suian looked surprised. "In other words, there’s a third path of mutation?"

"That can’t be right. Mutants are already bizarre enough. Could a third type be even more out there?" Qi Suian didn’t really get it.

[No corresponding data. Confirmed: one suit of Level 2 bionic armor is present.]

At this, Qi Suian came to a realization.

"They come with ill intent," Qi Suian muttered. At this stage, setting aside any hidden schemes, the most powerful weapon in the wasteland was Level 2 bionic armor.

After all, the power of Fire Seed Armor dropped significantly outside a Sanctuary. To defeat a Level 2 bionic armor—which had the attributes of a Level 2 Fire Seed Armor—the Tai Sui God had only one option.

Use the Floating Cannons.

[Mind your phrasing. You are the one who has come.]

"Fair point..." Qi Suian realized at once. He was the invader in this world. If they killed him, it would be in self-defense.

"Get the Floating Cannons ready."

Qi Suian ignored his own status as the aggressor. He knew he couldn’t defeat a Level 2 bionic armor head-on.

In that case, if he couldn’t get what he wanted, he would just kill them.

That would prevent any further complications.

As for the opportunity, he didn’t have to be the one to claim it. Destroying it so no one else could have it was just as good.

It was a net loss, but there was no other way. The enemy guarding the opportunity was too strong, and it was even possible the enemy *was* the opportunity.

Since the consciousness within his protagonist’s halo had been erased, it sometimes had a tendency to overdo things.

The simplest example was that it would present him with opportunities he wasn’t necessarily strong enough to seize.

Just like the Wasteland King he encountered upon entering the Wasteland World. That was an "opportunity," but it was something far beyond his ability to handle.

That was why Qi Suian would rather pass.

Fifty-six Floating Cannons slowly materialized from folded space.

This was finally starting to look like a proper interstellar psionic cannon swarm.

Faint wisps of Evil Dragon Power coiled around each Floating Cannon, which also possessed the effects of a gluttonous feast and armor penetration.

These were all additional buffs from other modules.

Under the AI’s control, they shot into the sky, heading for the destination pinpointed by the reconnaissance network.

The Tai Sui God and Qi Suian, however, remained stationary.

Thanks to modules for signal, communications, and the like, the control range was greatly extended, and their accuracy was far superior to before.

It was a shame there were still so few of them. The more numerous they were, the more powerful they would be.

With trillions of Floating Cannons, destroying an entire galaxy would be no problem at all.

Yet, there was a paradox: to support that many Floating Cannons, the Tai Sui God would need an equally astronomical armor value.

And with trillions in armor value and a vast number of modules, there were plenty of other ways to destroy a galaxy.

-----------------

"Level 2 bionic armor... Damn it. You were once an Elder of a Level 1 Sanctuary."

Kemp, waking from unconsciousness, looked resigned. It was no surprise he had lost.

That was Level 2 bionic armor. Even in a Level 1 Sanctuary, only an Elder could possess such a thing.

Just as Kemp finished his question, he saw a pile of bones and realized that more than half of the elite mutants he’d brought with him were gone.

His eyes widened in a furious glare.

He knew exactly where the missing mutants had gone—into the bellies of this group of Corpse Eaters.

"Someone who could become an Elder is quick on the uptake."

"If I eat you, maybe I’ll get a sharp mind like yours, too."

"Then I might not have been framed and driven out of the Sanctuary all those years ago."

"My name is Hayman, former Fifth Elder of the Holy Angel Sanctuary. But you probably wouldn’t know me."

"After all, when I left the Holy Angel Sanctuary, the leader of your Steel Brotherhood hadn’t even been born."

The Corpse Eater calling himself Hayman casually tossed a bone aside. He licked all ten of his fingers clean before continuing.

Kemp fell silent upon hearing this.

He knew of the Holy Angel Sanctuary. There were a total of six Level 1 Sanctuaries on the entire planet.

The Holy Angel Sanctuary he mentioned was ranked second among them and had always been at odds with the Steel Brotherhood.

As for why there were fewer Level 1 Sanctuaries than victorious Edens, it was simply because the others had been wiped out in the competition.

Everyone wanted to be number one, and the only way to stay number one forever was to eliminate the competition.

Back in the day, each victorious Eden had used a Fire Seed Source Fragment to create two Level 1 Sanctuaries.

So in the beginning, there were twenty-four. Through brutal competition, only six remained today.

It just showed how brutal the fighting had been.

All of the current Level 2, 3, 4, and 5 Sanctuaries were offshoots of these six remaining Level 1 Sanctuaries.

Now, the six Level 1 Sanctuaries were evenly matched, so destroying one another was no longer easy. It would require the right opportunity.

However, that opportunity was already quietly approaching. The Sanctuaries’ resource crisis hadn’t erupted yet, but once it did, it would trigger a new round of wars between them.

"The Fifth Elder of the Holy Angel Sanctuary... It’s no wonder we lost." Cummings, who had just regained consciousness, had also heard Hayman’s introduction, his face etched with bitterness.

Just that single suit of Level 2 bionic armor was enough to change the tide of a war, yet it had been deployed just to deal with them.

"Before I die, I want to know who sent you to eat us," Kemp said.

Hayman wiped his mouth, his expression unchanging. "We Corpse Eaters have professional integrity. Especially since we’ve already taken payment from our client, we won’t be selling their information."

’Why would I tell them?’ he thought. ’We’re full now and don’t feel like eating at the moment. If some accident happened and one of them escaped, wouldn’t the information get out?’

’So, the best way is to say nothing.’

"However, if you’re willing to tell me about your leader..." Hayman’s tone suddenly shifted as he asked.

"Impossible! Don’t even think about it!" Cummings cut him off immediately.

"It’s not entirely out of the question, but you have to go first," Kemp, however, had a different idea. He planned to get the information for free, with no intention of revealing what the other party wanted to know.

He’d get the intel, and since he was going to die anyway, there was no way he’d actually tell them anything.

"Tch." Hayman sneered. He could see right through Kemp’s little ploy.

He opened his mouth to say something else, but before the words could come out, disaster struck.

A terrifying storm of energy swept through their temporary camp. At the same time, he saw a large number of bizarre mechanical constructs.

He couldn’t understand how these things were flying.

But now wasn’t the time to ponder that. He clearly saw these strange machines unleash Dark Rays.

When a Dark Ray hit one of the Corpse Eaters, the victim instantly disintegrated into pitch-black particles.

What was worse, there were a huge number of these machines.

And ten of them were aimed directly at him.

Fortunately, they didn’t fire, which made him realize they most likely wanted to take him alive.

It wasn’t just him; the remaining Corpse Eaters also froze, sensing the same intent.

The bound mutants, for their part, were completely bewildered, with no idea what was happening.

"I am Hayman, a Cardinal of the Corpse Eaters. How may I be of service?" Hayman had lost his nerve, his voice now humble.

He was indeed wearing Level 2 bionic armor, but the problem was the sheer number of opponents. Their speed and accuracy were also incredibly high.

Hayman didn’t want to gamble on whether he could dodge or tank those unknown Dark Rays with his armor.

Even if he won that gamble, all the machines would attack him at once, and he’d still die.

If he lost, he’d die instantly.

He felt no indignation. His enemy was stronger, so they naturally held the right to decide his fate.

It was just like with the purebloods and mutants he had eaten himself—nothing more than the law of the jungle, the strong preying on the weak.

He could eat the weak, so someone stronger could control his life. It was just like when he lost the struggle and was cast out of the Holy Angel Sanctuary.
