Chapter Fourteen — Claimed by Two Powers

3 weeks ago · 6 min read

Dawn came, but the training grounds remained tense and silent. Ninsara stood like a statue in full armor, arms crossed over her plated chest, her gaze fixed on the road leading from the temple district. The appointed hour had come and gone. Zephyr had not returned.

Aylin went still for a moment. If she wanted Zephyr back at her side, she needed to push the commander hard enough to react.

“She moved beside Ninsara, running a thumb along the spear shaft. “They’re testing you, Commander.”

“They are testing Uruk,” Ninsara replied. “And they will regret it.”

She did not wait longer. With a sharp gesture, she gathered a detachment of twelve of her best—hardened canal guards who knew better than to question her mood.

They moved through the waking streets of Uruk at a brisk march. Citizens paused in doorways and along canal edges to watch. Whispers followed them like ripples on water.

The Temple of Inanna rose before them, its stepped platform gleaming in the morning light. Priests at the lower gates moved to block their path, but Ninsara did not slow.

“Stand aside,” she ordered. When one hesitated, she shoved him aside with her forearm—firm enough to send him stumbling. The detachment flowed past without breaking stride.

They reached the main sanctum as morning rites were concluding. Enheduanna sat upon her raised dais, regal and unmoved, flanked by senior priests. Ila-Seret stood slightly behind her, hands folded, expression carefully neutral. Zephyr was nowhere in sight.

Ninsara stopped at the center of the chamber, boots planted wide. “The agreement was clear,” she said. “He returns at first light. I have waited. Where is my subject?”

Enheduanna’s eyes narrowed. “Circumstances have changed. The man’s artifacts sang to the Tablets of Venus. The canals themselves grew restless in his presence. He is no simple foreigner. He is an anomaly that threatens the sacred order.”

“He is a man who sees patterns your priests miss,” Ninsara shot back, stepping forward. “A man who warned us of the raid and helped turn it aside. While your temple danced and chanted, he bled on the ridge.”

Enheduanna’s voice remained calm, but her eyes burned with authority. “And yet his presence stirs lust and weakness in even the disciplined. Priest Kesh’s fall was only the first sign. Your own… attachment has not gone unnoticed, Commander.”

Ninsara’s hand tightened into a fist. “You dare question my judgment?”

“I question anything that clouds the sight of those meant to protect Uruk,” Enheduanna replied. “Including you.”

“Release him,” Ninsara said, voice dropping into something dangerous, “before I decide the temple has forgotten its boundaries.

Ila-Seret stepped forward then, raising her hands. “High Priestess, keeping him here now turns him into a fracture the city cannot afford.”

A priest moved to intercept; Ninsara grabbed him by the front of his robe and slammed him hard against a carved pillar. The impact echoed through the sanctum. Another guard reached for her—Ninsara’s armored elbow drove into his midsection, dropping him to his knees with a choked gasp.

“Enough.”

The voice came from the side passage — old, weary, and heavy. Three council Elders emerged, their robes faded with age and reverence. The eldest, raised a wrinkled hand.

“This will not serve Inanna, nor Uruk,” he said firmly. “The temple and the canal watch have stood together for generations. We will not tear that bond today.”

Enheduanna’s lips pressed into a thin line. Ninsara remained rigid, breathing controlled but furious.

The elder continued, “The stranger will return with the Commander. However… he must submit to three nights of ritual observation each week. In return, the military may station one watcher of their choosing during those nights.”

Aylin stepped forward, cautious but steady. “I can do it.”

Ninsara studied her briefly. “You're capable… You’re needed in the field.”

“That’s precisely why I should go,” Aylin said. “Zephyr will be safer with me.”

Ninsara’s eyes flicked to Aylin, then back to the elders. “Acceptable,” she said. “But if any harm comes to him—”

“He will be returned unharmed,” The elder assured her. “This is the will of the council.”

Enheduanna said nothing

Moments later, Zephyr was escorted out from the side chamber. His gaze locked onto Ninsara immediately. Relief, heat, and something deeper passed between them.

Zephyr said nothing. In his mind, he was already thanking Ninsara. Without her, the high priestess would have torn him apart.

Ninsara crossed the distance in three strides, gripped his jaw with one gauntleted hand, and inspected him roughly—turning his face left and right, checking for injury.

“We are leaving,” she said, voice low enough for only him to hear.

The walk back through Uruk was silent at first. Only when they reached the canal district did Ninsara speak again, low enough for only him to hear.

“They held you past the agreement,” she said. “Tell me what they tried to become with you in that time.”

Zephyr picked his words with care. “Just conversations. Inanna’s stories. The dances… nothing else.”

Ninsara’s grip on his arm tightened. “You are turning into leverage between forces that do not care if you survive it.”

“You will come to me tonight,” she growled. “No temple. No excuses. No more waiting.”

Later that Night.

The heavy woven curtain had barely fallen behind them when Ninsara shoved Zephyr against the stone wall of her chamber with enough force to knock the breath from his lungs.

“You made me stand in that temple holding control I didn’t want to hold,” Ninsara said.

Before he could answer, her mouth crashed into his. Her strong hand gripped the back of his neck, fingers twisting into his mullet as she pressed her entire body against him.

Zephyr kissed her back just as fiercely, one hand sliding to the small of her back, the other gripping her hip. “I’m here now, Commander,” he murmured against her lips.

Ninsara pulled back just enough to glare at him, breathing hard. “Strip. Now.”

She didn’t wait for obedience. Her hands were already yanking at the temple linen, tearing it open with impatient strength. The fabric pooled at his feet.

“Damn that strength… hope you don’t tear me in half,” Zephyr muttered with a short laugh.

His cock sprang free, already thick and hard.

Ninsara reached for his cock. Zephyr stopped her mid-motion, holding her hand as he shook his head. “Your turn.”

Ninsara answered with a sharp, frustrated growl.

Every piece of leather and linen he removed from her, she countered with a rough kiss or a bite to his shoulder.

When her robe came off, it revealed a body built from strength—full breasts and a presence that didn’t soften even in stillness.

Zephyr’s gaze lingered on her breasts longer than he meant it to. It left Ninsara unsettled in a way she couldn’t quite name.

He lifted one of her breasts in his hand, surprised by how much filled his palm. “So this is where all the resources went.”

Ninsara shot forward and wrenched his hand back.

Zephyr leaned in and took one of her nipples into his mouth, sucking firmly. Ninsara hissed, her hand fisting in his hair, holding him there as her back arched.

“Enough games,” she commanded.

She pushed him backward onto her wide sleeping platform, covered in layered wool and linen.

Outside, Aylin received a small folded clay strip from Ila-Seret and closed her fingers around it without a word. She stood still for a moment, weighing it, then broke the seal and read.

Inside, a single line: Ila-Seret requests a private meeting with the Commander.

Aylin read it once.

Then again—slower this time.

Her expression didn’t change, but something in her posture did.

Aylin folded it shut again, expression unreadable. She hesitated only briefly—deciding not whether to act, but how to present it. The seal was already broken. She would have to say it arrived that way.
