Chapter Thirteen — Veils of the Underworld

3 weeks ago · 6 min read

Zephyr slept uneasily in the small side chamber. The thin linen robe had shifted during the night, and his right hand had slipped beneath the fabric, resting warmly against the base of his semi-hard cock.

The curtain whispered open. A young priestess named Heshet entered carrying a small clay lamp. She was perhaps twenty-four, with gentle features and dark hair bound in a simple braid. Her eyes fell on his sleeping form, particularly the obvious position of his hand beneath the robe. A soft, surprised giggle escaped her before she could stop it.

“Inanna stirs the flesh before she stirs the soul.” She murmured it like an old prayer, each syllable weighted and slow.

Zephyr startled awake, blinking rapidly. He quickly withdrew his hand. “What the fuck?”

The word cracked out of him in a tongue that didn’t belong here.

He froze, then looked at his watch and corrected himself, voice shifting. “What are you doing here at this hour?”

The priestess Heshet blinked.

The strange syllable still echoed in her ears. Her brows drew together.

“…Fuk?” she repeated slowly. “What is… fuk? Is that a deity?”

Zephyr wiped the sweat from his forehead. “We’ll talk about it later. Right now—why are you here, young priestess?”

“The High Priestess has commanded a Gala,” she said, setting the lamp on a stone ledge. “It begins before the night deepens. You are to be present.”

Zephyr sat up, rubbing his face. “A gala? Why now… and why am I the one involved?”

Heshet hesitated, glancing toward the curtain as if afraid someone might overhear. She lowered her voice. “Enheduanna ordered it suddenly after… Priest Kesh’s weakness at the altar.”

“I cannot say what moved through the High Priestess. She looks upon things that lie beyond our understanding.”

“What if I do not come?” Zephyr asked.

Heshet did not blink. “It would be unwise to test what follows that refusal, foreigner.”

The main ritual chamber burned with light and sound.

Dozens of oil lamps and braziers cast a golden, flickering glow across the circular space. Thick clouds of incense — myrrh, cedar, and a sweet, heady resin — hung heavy in the air, making the edges of vision soften and swirl. The rhythmic beat of drums and the high, haunting notes of reed flutes filled the chamber.

High above on a stone throne sat Enheduanna, fully robed in deep blue wool edged with gold, her expression cold and commanding.

Zephyr took in the view. “You’ve arranged all this rather fast.” He followed it with a shallow bow.

“Bow if you wish. It changes nothing.” Enheduanna replied.

Most of the gala performers were nearly nude, wearing only sheer veils, strings of gold beads, and streaks of sacred paint across their bodies. Men and women moved with fluid, sensual grace, as they danced in complex, intertwining patterns.

Some blurred the lines between genders in deliberate celebration of Inanna’s transformative power, their movements slow and unguarded, charged with a quiet, open sensuality, backs arching, hands tracing bare skin as they circled the chamber.

Beside the High Priestess sat Ila-Seret. She too remained robed. Her gaze kept returning to Zephyr as he was led to a lower dais at the center of the ritual space.

Enheduanna gave a small, controlled nod. The performers incorporated Zephyr into their circle, brushing against him, offering reverent touches.

Zephyr jerked back. “Wait—don’t take me.”

The dancers did not slow. If anything, their movements sharpened as they guided him deeper into the circle.

At the height of the rhythm, one of the most fluid gala priests broke from the pattern—an androgynous figure, strikingly beautiful, kohl-darkened eyes steady, lips painted as if for ceremony rather than beauty.

He approached Zephyr without hesitation.

Before Zephyr could register the shift, the priest leaned in and pressed a brief kiss to his throat.

Zephyr stiffened, heat flashing through him. He yanked back, eyes locking on Enheduanna. You punish one man and then allow this—what are you doing?”

The drums faltered. The flowing movements of the dancers stuttered and slowed.

Enheduanna’s face darkened with visible anger. “Do not interpret what you have not been permitted to understand.”

“One action breaks the rite. Another completes it.”

Ila-Seret half-rose from her seat, worry clear in her expression, one hand reaching out instinctively before she stopped herself forcefully.

“Then release him,” Zephyr said sharply, still watching the circle where the priests moved. His jaw was tight, breath uneven. “Or punish that one too. You don’t get to decide who is touched and who isn’t.”

Enheduanna studied him for a long moment. “You are no longer in a speaking position within this space.”

Zephyr stiffened. “What is that supposed to mean?”

Enheduanna did not raise her voice. “It means your presence will be contained.”

He stepped back instinctively. “Contained? I didn’t do anything—”

Two attendants closed in from either side.

Zephyr’s breathing sharpened. “You’re imprisoning me for asking questions?”

Stone doors—older than the inner hall—were already open behind him. Zephyr turned his head sharply. “You can’t just decide this—there’s a military agreement.

For the first time, Enheduanna’s gaze flicked slightly.

The incense, the disrupted ritual energy, and the constant pulsing of the silver chain and obsidian ring overwhelmed him. Zephyr’s vision blurred. The chamber spun, and he stood in an ancient underground realm.

Dark stone passages stretched before him, illuminated by flickering torches set in walls veined with lapis lazuli and gold. The air was cool and heavy, carrying the scent of deep earth and distant water. He descended a long stairway, each step echoing into vast silence.

At the bottom waited a woman of impossible beauty and presence.

She was naked except for divine ornaments. A horned crown, heavy gold at her throat and wrists with unknown symbols. A belt of carnelian and lapis rested against her hips, catching faint light whenever she moved.

Her body was full, hips wide and powerful, skin glowing with an inner light.

Zephyr’s mouth moved before meaning could catch up.

“Those hips—” A pause, like the sentence lost its shape. “Where am I? Who are you?”

She smiled, slow and enigmatic. “You walk where veils thin. Between what was, what is, and what must break.”

Her voice echoed. She spoke of patterns fracturing across time, of Venus burning in the sky, and of seams that could no longer hold.

As they moved deeper through the underworld passages, the sharp intelligence in her eyes, the elegant line of her braids, the thoughtful tilt of her head — they carried an unmistakable resemblance to Ila-Seret. The realization unsettled him deeply.

He stopped. “You look like…. This place feels older than anything in Uruk. Who are you really?”

The woman stepped closer. The heavy jewelry at her chest shifted slightly, revealing glimpses of the skin beneath.

His hand lifted hesitantly toward the heavy gold set against her breasts.

She caught the motion midway.

Her fingers gently redirected his wrist away.

Then, without breaking eye contact, she brought her hand to his cheek. Her touch sent blue sparks dancing along his penis. Then she kissed him.

Her lips moved against his with hunger. Even in dream, visions flooded through the kiss — endless cycles of Venus, the warehouse in Dubai flickering like a dying star. Zephyr felt himself falling into her, body and mind.

Zephyr woke with a violent gasp, bolting upright. His heart hammered wildly. The chamber had gone eerily quiet.

The dream clung to him like a second skin. That woman… she had looked so much like Ila-Seret. The same eyes. The same graceful strength. But the underground realm, the ancient weight of her presence — it had felt far older than this temple, older than Sumer itself. As if she had existed long before these walls were raised.

He shook his head, trying to dismiss it. Just a dream. But the feeling would not leave him.
