Chapter 226 : The Letter to Unknown Recipient (3)

2 weeks ago · 12 min read

The Letter to Unknown Recipient (3)

They had found the letter hidden by the Security Bureau, and even revealed the secret contents inside. However, Lee Gyeongbok's expression was grave.

"Now, the problem is what to do with this letter."

At his words, question marks floated up in the chat window. What kind of problem could there be with the letter?

"If I just put it back, even the Security Bureau side will get suspicious. And if it comes to light that the 'only' thing targeted was the letter, then they'll suspect the Preston Agency."

As Lee Gyeongbok continued his explanation, the audience also understood.

― Oh? That's true.

― Lol, I was only thinking about going to Galleon Island

― Detective P never misses a detail, I'm telling you

― Then how about burning it?

― Lol, since you snuck in as a wanted criminal anyway, they might think it's a gang's doing?

Lee Gyeongbok rolled his eyes at the viewers' suggestions.

"Not a bad idea. But, roderi has incredible freedom, right? I wonder if this will work too."

Soon, he gave a slight smile and rummaged through the desk drawers. What he pulled out was a pen and paper.

"After seeing the black-and-white photo on the train, I thought of something. In this era, photography isn't that developed, right? I doubt they'll remember the handwriting."

He then copied the letter's contents onto the paper. He intended to place this transcribed letter into the envelope.

― Lol, swapping it with a fake letter?

― Yeah, there's no way they'd have taken a photo of it, lol

― For real, they might remember the contents, but the handwriting?

― Is this really going to work?

― I think it could.

― Even during the Lancaster case, the manor burning down was reflected in the dialogue, lol

― It's not that the AI responses are fixed, they seem to change depending on the situation?

― Ultimate freedom game, wow

While the viewers noisily chatted, Lee Gyeongbok finished the letter. He slipped the fake letter into place and left the records room.

"Oh? It's a cutscene."

Cautiously shutting the door behind him, alex tried to go down to the first floor. But sheriffs were coming up from the staircase.

"Who the hell is this Dutch Morgan guy?"

"For now, let's check the records room... Huh?"

By chance, they had a fake wanted poster in hand. The sheriff's gaze flicked between Alex and the wanted poster.

"Ah, busted."

Lee Gyeongbok spoke absentmindedly as the threat level spiked in an instant. As expected, the sheriffs' eyes widened.

"Escapee! He's escaping!"

With that shout, the entire building shook.

"What!?"

"Escaped?!"

"Alert! Alert!"

The chat window was no different.

― Wait, what's with this forced drama?

― If this wasn't a cutscene, godple would have never gotten caught, lol

― This must be a scripted cutscene to increase difficulty, lol

― Roc&Roll shenanigans! I'm jealous!

― Wow, this really seems impossible

― But if it's Godple?

While the viewers worried, a sheriff hurriedly drew his gun. But his colleague quickly stopped him.

"Don't shoot! You'll damage the investigation materials!"

"What? Ah, damn it!"

Alex was standing with his back to the records room. Since there were lots of investigation materials in there, any stray bullet would pierce through them.

― Wow, at least they're letting you breathe

― They do have some conscience, lol

― They're set not to kill you immediately

― My thoughts exactly, lol, how do you get out of this?

― Maybe you just escape through a cutscene and not actual gameplay?

The viewers were relieved by the situation. But contrary to their expectations, the rest was up to the player, Lee Gyeongbok.

"Catch him!"

"Second floor! He's on the second floor!"

With the sheriffs' shouts, control returned.

"I could use the gun, but I won't."

Lee Gyeongbok reminded viewers that he'd taken a pistol from a guard. But that wasn't a good option.

"I don't really want to kill a sheriff, and if I shoot, they'll be forced to shoot back."

With that, he dashed down the hallway. At the end of it was a window.

"What on earth... Urk!"

A sheriff rounding the corner couldn't stop Lee Gyeongbok. Hit by Gyeongbok's sprinting punch, he fell without finishing his sentence.

"Stop right there! If you don't stop, I'll... Ugh!"

Another sheriff blocking the way desperately drew his pistol, but he, too, couldn't stop Lee Gyeongbok.

Lee Gyeongbok used his lasso, yanking the sheriff down with a pull.

"They'll let me off for property damage at least, right?"

Saying so, Lee Gyeongbok drew his pistol and shot the window. With a crash, glass shards fell.

"Damn it...!"

"He's jumping from the second floor!"

"Idiot! His legs will be shattered!"

"Circle around to the first floor and arrest him!"

At that, the voices of sheriffs echoed from behind.

― Hyung!? Is this real!?

― Sprinting jump from the second floor? Is that okay?

― Even in a game, wouldn't your legs be busted?

― Trust Godple!

― If it's Godple, he can do it!

Amidst the mix of worry and cheering, Lee Gyeongbok smiled. Without hesitation, he stepped onto the window sill and jumped.

At the same time, he twisted his body and threw the lasso backward.

"W-whoa!"

"Be careful!"

One chasing sheriff got tangled up in the lasso. Caught in the noose, he was yanked and slammed right into the window sill.

Thanks to that, Lee Gyeongbok's fall was abruptly stopped.

"See? Didn't get hurt, right?"

With a relaxed comment to the viewers, Lee Gyeongbok landed atop the prisoner transport wagon below.

-????

― Wait, you're using the rope like that?

― For real, godple's rope action is legendary...

― If he missed, it would have ended right there, no?

― But since it's 'Perfect-Rope,' he never misses, lol

― Sharp run timing, lol

While viewers marveled in awe and satisfaction—

"He's getting away!"

"After him!"

"Damn it!"

—The chase wasn't over. In fact, it was only just beginning.

The sheriffs burst through the back door and quickly mounted their horses. At the same time, a new UI appeared in Lee Gyeongbok's view.

[Wanted Ranking - ★★★☆☆]

The sheriff badge icon instantly jumped to 3 stars. The change caused uproar in the chat window.

― Wow, it's 3 ranking immediately?

― First wanted level is 3 stars, damn lol

― Does 3 star mean a kill order?

― By GAT standards, 1 star is capture, 2 is shoot if resisted, 3- kill on sight

― Yep, once you hit 3 stars, they upgrade their gear

Lee Gyeongbok could tell that the chat was right.

"Doesn't matter if you kill!"

"Shoot!"

The chasing sheriffs immediately opened fire. And not with pistols, but with rifles and repeaters.

With the clang of metal, sparks flew—fortunately, the prisoner wagon behind acted as a bullet shield.

"I'm getting out of town first."

Lee Gyeongbok spurred the horses.

The viewers agreed.

― When you're wanted, the right move is to run, lol

― At least in GAT, you can survive with grenades or body armor, lol

― But Godple only has a pistol!

― Hyung! You need to get out of sight! Only then does your wanted ranking drop!

― Don't you know about the Lawless Sanctuary?

― Godple's got it all figured out

Even if he held out in the city, more sheriffs would only keep coming. The standard procedure was to hide and wait until the wanted level dropped.

However, Lee Gyeongbok thought differently.

"This is a prisoner transport wagon; the speed is slow. It's hard to shake them off."

While the transport was a shield from bullets, it was also a burden. If he kept running, it would only tire Gyeongbok's horse.

― Wow, you're right

― The distance is shrinking too

― That makes hiding in the mountains tough

― So what do you do then?

― Take out the sheriffs now?

― But that'd probably tank your lawfulness stat, yikes

― First, just survive!

Viewers didn't think Lee Gyeongbok would get caught. With his shooting skills, he could handle the sheriffs.

The worry was what came after.

"I don't want to kill, but I do have to incapacitate them."

Saying this, Lee Gyeongbok drew his pistol, skillfully flipping open the cylinder to check the ammo.

'Oh? Is it because it's Master difficulty?'

Once he drew his gun, the sheriffs' response changed.

― Huh? Why are they suddenly spreading out?

― Are they giving up the chase?

― Wow, once Godple pulls a gun, they keep their distance

― Looks like they're trying to get a shooting angle?

― Do the NPCs really calculate all that?

The sheriffs split to the sides. Lee Gyeongbok wasn't surprised, he just smiled.

"This is really well made."

There was no time to delay.

He grabbed the reins.

With his horse's sudden deceleration, Lee Gyeongbok darted in between the sheriffs.

To the viewers, it looked dangerously close to suicide.

But the feeling didn't last.

"Shoot him!"

As gunfire erupted, Lee Gyeongbok clung to the rear of the prisoner wagon and threw the lasso.

"What, urgh!"

The lasso caught a repeater, snatching it from a sheriff's grip; before he knew it, Lee Gyeongbok was holding the repeater.

"Damn it!"

The disarmed sheriff fell back in a panic. Bullets flew from the other side, but only sparks bounced off again.

― Crazy lol, did he just steal their gun?

-???: Don't have a gun? Just take one, right?

― Lol, when you look, none of Godple's gear is even his—pistol and rope were all taken from guards

― Straight-up Old West "take and use what you find"

― Secondhand all the way, lol

The viewers shifted their attention. Lee Gyeongbok wedged his feet between the bars of the prison cell and stood up. Then, from that position, he shouldered the repeater and aimed.

"Whoa!"

"What the—grgh!"

With the first shot, he hit the sheriffs' own repeaters. Taken by surprise, the sheriffs dropped their rifles.

"All done."

Lee Gyeongbok answered easily and climbed back onto the horse.

-????

― What did I just see?

-(Kemalcon)(Kemalcon)(Kemalcon)

― Insane core strength;;;

― I thought only the game had insane freedom, but Godple's physical freedom is on another level?

― What do you even call body freedom, lol

― That accuracy in such a pose? Crazy

Viewers couldn't believe it. Who would ever shoot like that?

"Oh, the wanted ranking is dropping."

With the sheriffs gone, the badge icon began slowly ticking down.

― Wow, that's awesome

― Good thing Godple plays lawfully, because if he played lawless, neither the Security Bureau nor bounty hunters could catch him, lol

― That would be 'Perfect-Outlaw'

― Seriously, he's someone who could live without laws

― Whether lawful or not, he probably can't die

― Ultra-legal gunslinger, wow

Thanks to that, the viewers felt relieved.

* * *

The next day, after the wanted ranking completely disappeared, Lee Gyeongbok returned to the agency.

A cutscene began as he entered.

"Oh! You're safe!"

The manager brightened at the sight of him.

"My word, you were really something. The Security Bureau was in an uproar! Thanks to you, the fake wanted poster we made has become real!"

He laughed heartily and pointed to the wanted poster on the wall.

"It's an official one made by the Security Bureau. All the sheriffs are out for blood to catch that Dutch Morgan outlaw. The reward money is quite big, too."

It looked a bit different from the one they'd faked. The bounty had almost quintupled.

"I've found the information."

Alex, unlike the smiling manager, spoke seriously. When he passed on the letter's contents, the manager also turned grave.

"Galleon Island, you say...?"

"Please look into the fastest ship available."

"Yes, that won't be difficult. But you must be careful. It's good we know the location, but how to find it is more important. We can't just comb over the island blindly, can we?"

The manager sighed briefly before continuing.

"Since we stole materials from the Security Bureau, it will be difficult to ask them for cooperation. They'll want to know where we got that info."

"If they start with the hidden letter, working together is next to impossible."

"Yes, and our agency's own manpower is hardly enough to investigate..."

He said, watching Alex closely.

― At critical moments, neither the Security Bureau nor the agency are any help

― At least the agency gives some supplies or support, though, lol

― The Security Bureau is the weakest link

― For real, they just get in the way

Viewers voiced their dissatisfaction. Meanwhile, alex nodded.

"I'm not expecting manpower support. In fact, I would have refused it even if it was available."

"Sorry?"

"If several detectives suddenly show up on the island, our target could catch on first. It's safer for me to pursue alone."

"Ah, that risk does make sense."

"That's why I asked about the ship."

The manager nodded fast.

"Understood. If you need anything else, let me know at any time."

With that, the cutscene ended.

― What? That's it?

― So this time you just get the ship and that's all?

― You'll probably be able to do more once you get to the island, right?

― Just go get on the ship for now

Despite the viewers' urging, Lee Gyeongbok didn't walk outside. Instead, his eyes darted around, and soon, he spoke.

"I don't think they would have mentioned 'any help' for no reason."

― Help!

― Is there something more?

― But is there really anything else you can do?

― Even if they tell you to ask, nothing comes to mind

As he pondered, Lee Gyeongbok smiled.

"As you can see, this game allows for so much freedom. Trying various methods is part of the fun."

Question marks popped up in the chat.

Try? What did he mean by that?

"The current objective is to find the Hired Gun gang member hiding on the island. But you don't necessarily have to search on foot."

Lee Gyeongbok explained:

"If you send a letter, what do you wait for? A reply, of course. If I write a fake reply myself and hand it off to the post office on Galleon Island, wouldn't it be possible to wait and see who comes to pick it up?"

― Oh?

― Lol, impersonating a reply from the gang?

― Baiting with the letter?

― Does that mechanic work?

― It might, since he already swapped the fake letter in the records room, lol

― If this works, then ultimate freedom confirmed, lol

The chat buzzed with admiration and doubt mixed together. The way to test it was simple.

Lee Gyeongbok explained his idea to the manager and requested paper and an envelope.

"Oh! That's a splendid idea! Let me get that for you right away!"

The manager readily accepted the proposal. Soon, he handed Lee Gyeongbok pen, paper, and an envelope.

― Wait, it works?

― Lol, this is awesome

― Company obsessed with freedom, lol

― Damn, I was just gonna watch, but I can't resist!

― With so much freedom, my wallet just freed up too!

Amused by the viewers, Lee Gyeongbok smiled.

He used the letter in his possession to write a reply. He scribbled a quick response about the weather, food, and clothes.

"Could you get me some lemon juice and a brush?"

"Of course."

He received the supplies to encode the secret message.

Then, using the brush soaked in lemon juice, he wrote out hidden text.

― No way lol

― Are you insane, lol

― If someone checks with a candle, they'd be so pissed

-???: What is this crap?

― But they'll get caught anyway once it's checked, right?

― Every bad thing is always blamed on the British!

Watching the hidden message being written, the viewers burst out laughing.

With a mischievous grin, Lee Gyeongbok said,

"Why? I'm wishing them good luck."

The text he had written went as follows:

[This letter originated in England and must be resent within four days for good luck. If you don't send 7 copies to others, including this one, you will receive not good luck, but misfortune instead.]

The viewers laughed even harder at his antics.

― Hyung, you're so bad, lol

― Good luck? So it's 'one shot, one kill' for you!

― Lol, if you meet anyone else, you're getting hit by multiple shots

― For real, getting taken out instantly might actually be cleaner

-???: I AM good luck!

― Godple has ridiculous luck anyway

― If the gang gets this and sends Godple after other gangsters, it's basically a real chain letter for good luck

― Lol, that kind of luck I can respect

Just imagining how the outlaw might react to this letter was enough to make everyone laugh.
