Ch 2: The Tutorial Part 2

3 weeks ago · 8 min read

It didn’t cross.

It hovered at the threshold, its body tense in a way that hadn’t been there before, its expression twisting slightly as it hissed low in its throat. The others gathered behind it, their movements restless, their health bars jittering slightly as they paced but didn’t advance.

Erica stared at them for a second, her breathing slowly evening out as her stamina climbed back to full.

“…Yeah,” she said quietly. “That’s a boundary.”

They stood in a line, not crossing the imaginary boundary. Their grotesque mouths opened and drooling.

She held their gaze for another second, committing the behavior to memory, then turned away, already moving deeper into the structure.

"If this had a boundary, game sense says it's important. Maybe a tutorial mission." She told herself.

Erica took a few more steps down the sloping corridor, letting her breathing settle as her stamina bar filled back in. The space narrowed as she descended, the rough stone walls tightening into something more deliberate, like the deeper levels of the structure had been built rather than collapsed into place. The light from outside faded quickly, replaced by a dim, ambient glow that didn’t seem to come from any single source.

It wasn’t dark enough to hide things.

Just dark enough to make everything feel uncertain.

Her footsteps echoed now, soft but present, the sound carrying farther than she expected. She slowed slightly, more out of instinct than fear, letting her pace match the environment instead of fighting it.

A faint shimmer passed through the air ahead of her.

Erica stopped.

“…Okay,” she murmured.

It wasn’t visible in a normal sense. More like the space itself shifted, just for a second, like heat distortion over pavement. It stretched across the corridor from wall to wall, faint enough that she might have missed it if she’d been moving faster.

A boundary.

She stepped forward carefully and crossed it.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No alert. No sound.

But the air changed.

Subtly.

The temperature dropped just a fraction, enough that she felt it along her arms. The ambient light dimmed slightly, the shadows pulling longer along the edges of the corridor.

And then—

something moved.

Not behind her this time.

Ahead.

Erica’s posture shifted immediately, her weight settling lower, her steps quieter without her thinking about it. The rhythm she’d found outside carried over, but now it was tighter, more controlled.

The shape that emerged into view didn’t look like the ones from outside.

It was still wrong.

But in a different way.

Its body was thicker, more uneven, like muscle had grown without structure beneath its skin. One arm dragged slightly behind the other, elongated just enough to throw off its balance when it moved. Its head sat too low between its shoulders, its neck compressed into something that barely resembled a human shape anymore.

A thin red bar flickered above it.

───

?? – MUTATED VAMPIRE

HP: ██████████

───

“…New zone,” Erica whispered.

The creature didn’t rush her immediately.

It twitched.

That was the only word for it. Small, jerking movements as it adjusted to her presence, like it was processing something in pieces instead of all at once.

Erica didn’t engage.

She backed up one step, then another, keeping her eyes on it while slowly angling herself toward the edge of the corridor.

It didn’t follow.

It watched.

Just like the others.

But different.

“…Yeah,” she said quietly. “You stay here. I stay there.”

She shifted sideways, slipping past the edge of its space without triggering whatever line she had just crossed. The moment she cleared it, the creature’s attention dropped slightly, its posture loosening as if she had become less relevant.

Zone-based behavior.

That tracked.

She exhaled slowly, then continued deeper.

The corridor opened into a wider room, partially collapsed but still intact enough to explore. Broken furniture lay scattered along the walls, rusted metal frames and splintered surfaces that looked like they had been here long before the sand swallowed the upper levels.

Erica moved through it carefully, checking corners, glancing behind larger debris before stepping past it. Nothing moved. No new enemies triggered.

Just… space.

She scanned the room once more, then crouched slightly near a pile of overturned metal.

Something glinted.

She reached down and pulled it free.

A metal bat.

Old. Worn. Scratched along the surface like it had been used more than once, but still solid in her hands.

A small panel flickered into view.

───

ITEM ACQUIRED: METAL BAT

TYPE: BLUNT WEAPON

DURABILITY: LOW

───

Erica turned it once, testing the weight.

“…Okay,” she said. “That’s something.”

It wasn’t elegant. It wasn’t special.

But it was better than nothing.

She stood, resting it lightly against her shoulder as she looked toward the next corridor.

No markers.

No clear objective.

Just deeper.

“Guess we keep going,” she muttered.

The next stretch was narrower again, the walls closing in as the structure shifted downward. The air grew colder the farther she went, the ambient light thinning until shadows dominated most of the space.

Her grip on the bat tightened slightly.

Something felt… different.

Not wrong.

Just—

quiet.

Too quiet.

She took another step.

Then another.

The wall beside her exploded.

There wasn’t time to process it.

Stone and debris burst inward as something massive forced its way through, the impact sending fragments of rock across the corridor. Erica reacted on instinct, throwing herself sideways as the creature slammed into the space she had just occupied.

It hit hard enough to crack the floor beneath it.

The thing that rose from the impact wasn’t remotely human anymore.

It was larger than the others by a full head, its body thick with uneven muscle that bulged in the wrong places, its arms elongated and ending in clawed hands that scraped against the ground as it steadied itself. Its face was barely recognizable, its jaw stretched too wide, teeth jagged and uneven as it let out a low, guttural sound that vibrated through the space.

A red bar flared above it.

───

?? – BRUTE VAMPIRE

HP: ███████████████

───

“…Nope,” Erica said immediately.

She ran.

No hesitation this time.

Her stamina dropped hard as she pushed into a full sprint, the bat bouncing awkwardly in her grip as she adjusted her hold mid-stride. Behind her, the brute moved fast—faster than something that size should have been able to—its weight slamming into the ground with each step.

The corridor twisted.

She followed it without thinking, trusting the flow of the structure more than any deliberate plan. Her stamina dipped—

she eased off—

it recovered—

she pushed again.

The rhythm snapped back into place, tighter now, more urgent.

Behind her, the brute didn’t slow.

It crashed through anything in its way, ignoring the structure entirely as it forced its path forward.

“Okay—okay—okay—” she breathed, turning sharply as the corridor opened into a wider chamber.

Stairs.

Leading down.

She took them without slowing.

Her foot hit the first step—

slipped—

caught—

kept going.

The space at the bottom opened into a basement level, darker than anything above it. The air was colder here, heavier, the walls reinforced with something more solid than the upper structure.

Good.

Maybe.

She pushed forward—

And stopped.

A door.

Metal.

Set into the far wall.

Closed.

Locked.

“…Seriously?” she said, breath tight.

Behind her, the brute hit the bottom of the stairs.

Too close.

Erica turned, raising the bat without thinking, her stance uneven but ready. The creature advanced, slow now, deliberate, like it knew she had nowhere left to go.

Her stamina was low.

Not empty.

But not enough for another full burst.

“Okay,” Erica whispered, forcing herself to think instead of panic.

The brute stepped closer.

Its health bar didn’t move.

Her grip tightened around the bat, fingers adjusting instinctively as she shifted her weight, trying to remember anything that might help.

“If I hit it—”

The thought didn’t finish.

A sharp click sounded behind her.

Not loud.

But in the silence, it cut cleanly through everything.

Erica’s head snapped slightly toward the door just as the locking mechanism released with a heavy, mechanical clunk. The handle turned from the other side, deliberate and smooth, and the door opened inward just enough to break the seal.

Cool air slipped through the gap.

The brute reacted immediately.

It lunged.

Erica didn’t think—she moved. She twisted sideways and stumbled back through the opening as the door swung wider, her shoulder catching the edge as she half-fell into the space beyond.

She hit the ground hard, momentum carrying her a short distance across the floor, the bat slipping from her grip as she tried to recover.

Behind her, the brute surged forward—

And stopped.

Steel moved.

Not fast in the way panic looked fast.

Fast in the way something precise always arrived exactly on time.

A single step.

A single motion.

The blade cut across the creature cleanly, the strike so controlled it barely seemed to displace the air around it. For a split second, nothing happened.

Then the brute came apart.

Not staggered. Not resisted.

Cut.

Its body split mid-motion, momentum carrying the pieces forward before they collapsed heavily against the ground. The red health bar above it flickered once—

Then vanished.

Silence settled into the space, controlled and complete.

Erica pushed herself up onto her elbows, breath uneven as she turned back toward the doorway, expecting—honestly—something worse.

In a game like this, someone that strong showing up at the last second usually meant a different kind of danger.

The figure standing in the doorway didn’t rush forward.

She didn’t even move.

Dark hair framed her face, pulled back just enough to stay clear without looking styled, strands shifting slightly as she stepped fully into the room. Her posture was balanced without being rigid, her blade already still at her side like the strike that had just happened hadn’t cost her anything at all.

Beautiful.

Which, in a game like this, usually meant bad news.

Erica tensed instinctively, bracing herself even as she stayed half on the ground, not entirely sure if she should grab the bat or not.

The woman turned her head slightly, her gaze settling on Erica.

She didn’t look angry.

She didn’t look hostile.

She looked… confused.

Her eyes flicked upward briefly.

Erica followed the motion without thinking.

Names hovered above them both, steady and unquestioned.

Teresa Van Helsing

And—

Erica Van Helsing

“…Oh,” Erica breathed quietly.

That—

explained something.

Probably.

Later.

Her attention snapped back down as Teresa studied her more closely now, that same puzzled expression lingering, like something about this didn’t quite line up the way it should.

“…You’re not supposed to be down here, cuz,” Teresa said.

The word landed casually, like it didn’t need explanation.

Like it made perfect sense.

Erica blinked at her.

Once.

Then again.

She slowly pushed herself up the rest of the way, brushing dust off her arm before pointing vaguely upward at her own name.

“I feel like I missed a tutorial somewhere,” she said, glancing between Teresa and the door. “Also—thanks for that.”

Teresa didn’t react to the thanks.

Her gaze stayed on Erica for another second, sharp but not unfriendly, like she was trying to decide if this situation made sense or if it needed to.

Then she stepped back slightly from the doorway, giving her space.

“So…” she said, tilting her head just a fraction, “…coming in?”
