Chapter 242

Chapter 242: Nuria was waiting.

1 day ago · 5 min read

"No," Liam said immediately.

Arik’s mouth curved in a wider grin.

"No," Liam repeated, more firmly. "I reject that sentence."

"Everyone heard you."

Liam glanced toward the attendants.

Every face lowered with such disciplined speed that it became obvious they had heard every word.

Rubis appeared to be studying a particular section of marble with religious devotion.

"They heard nothing," Liam decided.

Mezos made a strangled sound.

Liam pointed at him without looking away from Arik. "You heard less than nothing."

"I am attempting to erase it from my memory."

"Attempt harder."

"I have suffered significant ether trauma."

Kamal stepped away from him. "Do not involve Nuria’s medical resources in this."

Arik’s smile deepened.

It transformed his altered face in a way Liam found profoundly unhelpful. The harsher lines remained, the sovereign ether still burning beneath his skin, but for one moment he was unmistakably the man who enjoyed watching Liam create disasters with his own mouth.

"You were looking," Arik said.

"I was conducting a visual examination."

"Of medically relevant areas?" Arik asked, perfectly shamelessly.

"I was establishing whether your proportions remained consistent."

Mezos turned his face toward the fractured column and pressed his forehead against it.

Kamal watched him. "Does the architecture seem less offensive now?"

"I owe it an apology."

Liam ignored them.

Arik leaned closer, forcing Liam to tilt his head back even farther. "Would you like to complete your examination?"

"No."

The answer came so quickly that Arik’s molten eyes narrowed with amusement.

"Not here," Liam corrected, and immediately regretted that more.

Mezos struck his forehead lightly against the column.

Rubis looked as though the hierarchy of his empire had become far more complicated than any surviving records had prepared him for.

Liam closed his eyes.

"I was pulled through a collapsing spatial boundary," he said. "My judgment has been compromised."

"You appeared equally compromised before the Gate took you," Arik said, clearly clinging to something he knew and considered normal through the chaos that he was in.

But the world was far from merciful to either of them.

The first bell rang above the balcony.

The sound passed through the marble beneath their feet, through the golden channels in the walls, through the air around Arik’s body, and then outward into Deira with a force that made Liam’s teeth ache.

Arik went still.

Liam noticed immediately because Arik’s hand at his waist stopped moving.

The amusement vanished from his face, but he hid the rest well. His expression settled into a controlled calm so smooth it looked almost natural.

The second bell followed.

Then a third.

Across the city, towers answered.

Gold light raced from the imperial palace down into the floating districts like a command traveling through nerves. The great ether rings around Deira accelerated with the precise coordination of a system waking from guarded sleep. Bridges illuminated. Transit lines slowed. Public screens, projection curtains, and high beacon arrays bloomed to life across terraces and towers.

Rubis dropped to one knee again.

So did the attendants.

Liam looked over the balcony rail despite himself.

Below, all of Deira was turning toward the palace.

"Oh," Mezos said from the fractured column.

For once, he did not sound amused.

Kamal’s face had gone pale.

"What is it?" Liam asked.

Before anyone could guess what was happening, the first projection opened in the air above the nearest tower.

A vast golden seal of a sleeping crowned dragon appeared. It rotated once, unfolded into Nurian script, and then the announcement began.

The language was not the same as Wrohan’s, not even close to Agaron’s as Liam expected.

Liam did not know it, and still, somehow, the meaning pressed against his mind through the palace’s ether, through the bond, through Arik’s hand on his waist.

The sovereign signature had returned.

The imperial palace had confirmed recognition.

The sealed throne systems had awakened.

Goliath Kaelen-Tor of Nuria had returned to Deira.

Liam’s stomach dropped.

"No," he said, not loudly this time.

The city and the system around them didn’t care as the announcement repeated from another tower.

Then another.

Then from the bridge networks, the civic galleries, the aerial transit platforms, the suspended market rings, the administrative terraces, and every visible public projection system across the floating capital.

Arik did not move.

That frightened Liam more than if he had cursed.

Through the bond, Liam felt the truth.

Arik could feel the city.

The announcement was not simply being broadcast by systems around them. It had been triggered by him. By the ether bleeding through his skin, by the sovereign signature the palace had tasted and accepted. It moved through the city on currents that answered him, and some part of Arik could sense each path it took.

Every tower lighting. Every ward waking. Every district receiving the signal.

Thousands of lives turning toward him, expecting to see their dormant ruler.

Arik’s fingers tightened once against Liam’s waist before he forced them still.

He was hiding how disturbing it was.

Of course he was.

The idiot.

Liam turned fully toward him, ignoring the bells, the kneeling attendants, the citywide announcement, and the fact that half of a vanished empire was currently being informed of a theological and administrative catastrophe.

"Arik."

Arik’s gaze remained on Deira. "I hear it."

Liam’s chest tightened. "The bells?"

"The bells." His voice was calm, almost flattened by his control over it. "The announcement. The palace systems. The district relays."

Rubis lifted his head slightly, awe written naked across his face. "Your Majesty can feel the city?"

Arik’s expression did not change.

Liam’s did.

"Do not sound impressed," he snapped.

Rubis lowered his head at once. "Forgive me, Your Majesty."

"I am not—" Liam stopped, because this argument had become an exhausting waste of oxygen. "Never mind."

Arik finally looked down at him.

For a moment, the gold in his eyes seemed too deep, like Arik himself was drowning in it.

Liam’s voice dropped. "Is it hurting you?"

"No."

"Do not lie."

Arik hesitated, he truly didn’t know how to name the feeling. It was both familiar and strange.

"It is not pain," he said.

"Then what is it?"

Arik looked back toward the city. The announcement rolled again across the towers, clear and bright and merciless.

"Possession," he said quietly.

The word chilled the air between them.

Mezos pushed away from the column at once. Kamal’s eyes closed.

Liam understood.

Arik had crossed the Gate to save him. He had forced open a boundary built by his own previous life. He had arrived in a city that knew the nature of his ether better than his name. And now the palace, the bells, the towers, and all of Deira were declaring him returned before he had even decided whether he could stand under the weight of it.

Liam reached up and took Arik’s face in both hands.

Arik looked at him.

"Your name is Arik Oberon Lyon," Liam said.
