Chapter 217: The Engagement

Liam was dressed.
That, according to the room, was already a diplomatic achievement.
His suit was the approved one, deep green and dark gold, severe enough to satisfy Mirelle, elegant enough to vindicate Andreas, and free of anything structured around his ribs, which Liam considered the only true victory of the morning. His hair had been styled simply, because he had chosen to wear it down, and Arik’s stylist was almost crying in a corner with the silent devastation of a man who had seen greatness refuse pins.
Liam ignored him.
Kamal, who had entered with tea and the air of a man who had witnessed empires collapse with less emotion than a stylist facing unbound hair, only sighed and informed Arik that Amara was recovering.
"Marin decided to push the treatment faster," Kamal said, setting the tray down. "As a result, she sleeps through most of the day. But she looks younger and healthier by the morning."
Arik’s expression softened almost invisibly. "Good."
"Very good," Kamal agreed. "I am beginning to understand why everyone tolerates his foul mouth."
Liam adjusted one cuff. "Because he is medically terrifying."
"Because he is effective," Kamal corrected.
"Same family of concepts."
Arik looked amused, which Liam chose not to reward because he was still recovering from the fact that his engagement suit actually looked good.
The door opened before anyone could answer.
Noah entered as if he owned at least part of the palace and had chosen, generously, not to mention it. His travel coat was still on, blonde hair slightly wind-touched, expression bright with the particular pleasure of a man arriving just in time to be annoying.
Liam stared at him.
"Well," he said. "Look who remembered Wrohan exists. I have not seen you in a long while."
Noah placed one hand over his heart. "That wounded me."
"You arrived dramatically. I assumed wounds were the goal."
"I was in Agaron."
Liam blinked. "You were what?"
"Home. In Agaron. I returned this morning."
"That explains the suspicious lack of you."
Noah’s eyes narrowed with theatrical hurt. "You did not miss me."
Liam looked at him, then at Arik, then back at Noah. "Stay in line. Arik was first."
Noah paused.
"For being missed?"
"For being resented."
Arik raised one brow.
Noah’s face brightened at once. "Ah. Excellent. What did he do?"
Liam’s smile was thin. "Secrets."
Noah’s amusement shifted, just slightly, into surprise. "He told you?"
The room went quiet.
Liam turned his head toward Arik.
Arik’s raised brow remained there, calm and deeply unhelpful.
"No," Liam said. "He did not."
Noah looked from Liam to Arik.
Then exhaled through his nose, almost laughing. "That is more like him."
Arik’s brow climbed higher.
"Noah," he said.
"What? I am agreeing with the evidence."
"You walked in thirty seconds ago."
"And already the evidence is strong."
Liam crossed his arms. "Were you one of the people who knew?"
Noah’s humor faded, but not into guilt exactly. More into the expression of a man realizing he had stepped into a room without reading the ’danger’ label.
"I knew pieces," he said. "Not all of it."
"Everyone knew pieces."
"That is usually how terrible secrets survive."
Liam looked unimpressed. "You are not helping your place in line."
Noah’s mouth twitched. "Where am I?"
"Behind Arik. Ahead of Stanford, depending on whether Stanford looks guilty when I see him."
Kamal made a soft sound into his tea.
Arik, disgracefully, looked entertained.
Noah glanced at Liam’s suit and wisely chose survival over commentary. "For what it is worth, I am glad you know now."
Liam looked at him.
Noah’s voice softened. "Even if you found out badly."
"That is one way to describe it."
"It is the polite one."
"Yes. I am saving the impolite one for after the engagement."
Arik’s gaze warmed.
Noah noticed and smiled. "Then I should congratulate you before you start ranking executions by emotional importance."
"Do not tempt me," Liam said.
Noah bowed, elegant and deliberately excessive. "Lord Liam. You look terrifyingly correct."
The stylist in the corner made a strangled sound of gratitude.
Liam sighed. "Finally. Someone understands visual correction as a threat."
Arik stepped beside him, close enough that his sleeve brushed Liam’s. "It suits you."
Liam did not look at him.
But he did not move away either.
—
The car waiting outside was not a car in the ordinary sense, because ordinary cars did not have layered ether-glass, reinforced chassis wards, silent climate fields, and two Shadows riding ahead on black motorcycles that looked civilian only to people who had never seen weapons pretending to be transportation.
Liam took one look at it and then at Arik.
"No."
Arik opened the door. "I have not said anything."
"You looked prepared."
"I am always prepared."
"That is exactly the problem."
Kamal, from behind them, made the faintest sound of amusement, then wisely disappeared toward the second vehicle before Liam could accuse him of complicity.
Liam entered first because retreat was no longer socially available. The interior was dark leather, polished metal, and soft ether-light that adjusted the moment he sat down, reading body temperature, channel strain, and probably his remaining patience.
Arik followed.
Then, before Liam could arrange himself with dignity, Arik caught him by the waist and pulled him smoothly into his lap.
Liam froze.
"Arik."
"Yes?"
"If you wrinkle these clothes, I will divorce you before we are even legally engaged."
Arik laughed, low and warm, his hand settling safely at Liam’s hip instead of anywhere near the cursed territory of ribs and tailoring. "I will use ether for that."
"For the wrinkles or the divorce?"
"The wrinkles. I intend to contest the divorce."
"You would."
"Vigorously."
The car began to move so smoothly Liam barely felt it, the palace drive sliding past beyond tinted ether glass in pale morning flashes. Security vehicles shifted around them with swiftness, turning the route to the engagement palace into a moving fortress.
Liam should have complained again.
He did not.
Arik’s lap was warm, his arm firm around him, his scent restrained but present beneath the dark silk and suppressant discipline. It made the enclosed space feel less like a royal vehicle and more like the continuation of a private room the world had not managed to breach.
"You are very calm for a man committing clothing crimes," Liam muttered.
"I am not calm."
Liam looked at him.
Arik’s eyes were on him with a focus that made the car, the convoy, the engagement, and Wrohan itself briefly become background.
Then Arik reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
Liam’s breath caught before he could stop it.
The case was small, black, and old-fashioned, without a visible crest. Arik held it in one hand for a moment, thumb resting over the seam, as if even he needed one breath before opening it.
"These are not for the ceremony," Arik said. "Not unless you want them to be. We can use the court rings later, the official ones, the ones everyone expects."
Liam looked at the case. "Then what are these?"
Arik opened it.
Inside rested two paired rings.
One was dark gold, almost black at the edges where ether had been worked into the metal in fine, ancient lines. The other carried the same gold through a deeper crimson inlay, subtle until the light touched it and made the color burn like a living thing.
Liam stared.
"They are engagement rings," Arik said quietly. "For us. Not for court."
Liam’s throat tightened.
"You brought private rings to a public engagement."
"Yes."
"Because you are impossible."
"Because before Wrohan sees anything, I wanted you to know what was mine to offer, not Agaron’s."
Liam looked from the rings to Arik’s face.
The car moved toward the palace.
Liam, still sitting in Arik’s lap, still dressed in the suit he had chosen, reached for the green-gold ring with fingers that were only slightly shaky.
"If this wrinkles my sleeve," he said, voice rough, "I am still divorcing you."
Arik smiled, bright and devastating. "Then I will fix the sleeve first."
