After seeing Gustav out, I forced myself up and headed to my study.
The moment I opened the door, the faint, warm scent of electronic components—that unique smell of an enclosed tech space—hit my nose.
Sitting at the center of my desk was my "main unit," the brain of my operation: a custom-built full-tower workstation.
For over a year now, this machine’s massive processing power had been utterly wasted. Its primary task had been serving as a glorified media server, streaming terabytes of video files from its HDDs to my tablet in the living room.
"Alright, old friend. Time to show me what you can actually do."
I nudged the mouse, waking three monitors from their long slumber.
First, I pulled up the Task Manager and started killing the background entertainment apps that had been hogging resources. The CPU load graph plummeted instantly, and the machine's full computational power returned to my fingertips.
Next, I spread out the mountain of reports I’d received from Gustav across my desk. Scrawled on parchment were population estimates, tax records, trade volumes of major goods, and the latest intel on the five surrounding territories: Duke Daryl’s land, Earl Baran’s land, Viscount Geister’s land, Marquis Loroa’s land, and the Free Trade City of Zem.
I began digitizing the messy, vague statistics, cross-referencing them with the data stored in my head to filter out the noise.
"Step one: data cleansing. Tama, care to help? No, of course not."
"Mrow. (Obviously. I’m far too busy with my primary job—keeping your keyboard warm.)"
Tama hopped onto the edge of the desk with practiced ease, positioning herself where the monitor’s exhaust vent would keep her toasty. I opened my spreadsheet software and started feeding Gustav’s info in as variables.
Labor migration vectors. Price index fluctuations. Market penetration rates of Felsen’s industrial goods.
I fed all this data into a custom simulation library I’d written in Python. I was using a dynamic model based on the concepts of "Input-Output Tables" and "System Dynamics," tools used back in my world for regional economic analysis.
After a few hours of wrestling with the data, a complex graph flickered to life on the screen. I dubbed it the *Felsen Regional Dynamics Map*. At the center was a dot labeled "Felsen," glowing with an intense, almost aggressive radiance.
Countless thin lines radiated from it toward the five surrounding territories.
However, almost every single line was colored a deep, angry red—the color of a "drain."
"Ouch. This is even worse than I thought. So this is the 'contradiction' Gustav was talking about."
I manipulated the visualized data, tweaking specific parameters. For instance, what happens if Earl Baran’s labor force drops by another five percent due to migration to Felsen?
On the screen, the blue circle representing Baran’s territory shriveled up. In response, a graph for "Security Maintenance Costs" in the neighboring Viscount Geister’s land spiked into the red.
The visualization was showing a negative feedback loop: farmers in Baran’s land go bankrupt, become refugees, and flood the neighboring territory, destabilizing the entire region.
On the monitor, the red lines looked like tentacles, sucking the "wealth" out of the surrounding nodes.
If left unchecked, the governing structures of those five territories would collapse within a few years. And before that happened, they would take the only option left to them: a physical attempt to force-quit the system. War.
"Meow. (How fascinating. So these glowing lines represent the exact quality of human resentment, then?)"
I tapped at the keyboard, overlaying a new simulation layer.
It was a plan to offload parts of Felsen’s "manufacturing processes" to the surrounding territories, even if it meant a slight drop in local efficiency.
Instead of just buying timber from Duke Daryl’s land, we would provide the tech to process it into "semi-finished goods" that meet Felsen standards.
Instead of just taking wool from Earl Baran’s land, we would lease them Felsen-made spinning machines, allowing them to produce yarn locally and sell it back to us with added value via a licensing agreement.
"I’m distributing the CPU load from the Felsen server across the surrounding nodes. If I give them roles as 'Felsen peripherals' and ensure they get their share of the profits, those red lines should turn into green 'symbiotic' lines."
The lines in the simulation slowly shifted from red to a calm, steady green. The GDP forecast curves for each territory began to trend upward, tracking alongside Felsen’s own growth.
This was it—the blueprint for the "Wide-Area Symbiotic Network" I needed to show Gustav.
"Phew. That was a lot of heavy lifting for someone who’s been living on a diet of pure entertainment..."
I leaned back into my chair, my neck popping as I stretched. The *Dynamics Map* on the monitor pulsed like a living thing.
What I was about to do was essentially a massive OS-level patch for the entire world.
"Alright, final step. Let’s set the main rig to output to the big screen in the living room."
I modified the media server settings that linked my study workstation to the home theater setup. I paused the video streaming protocols and switched to a real-time mirroring mode. Then, using my tablet, I whipped up a quick presentation UI that allowed me to manipulate the parameters intuitively.
With a tap, I could show a territory’s "exhaustion level" in color, and by sliding a bar to apply my proposed patches, I could show the future forecast curves changing in real-time.
"Perfect. Starting tomorrow, my luxury home theater is officially the most expensive operations room in the world."
I swiped the tablet screen, confirming that the *Felsen Regional Dynamics Map* was crisp and clear on the living room monitor, then nodded in satisfaction.
"Prrr... Meow. (I'm bored. Come to bed already.)"
"Is it that late already? Sorry, Tama. But if I don't finish this 'debugging' now, my retirement is going to get permanently deleted."
With that, I hit the save command.
