Chapter 32: The Vault Below

3 weeks ago · 3 min read

The vault door weighed nearly thirty tons.

Yet it stood open.

Not forced.

Unlocked.

Rasheed and Velocyte reached it at the exact same moment.

Their lightning collided briefly before fading.

Neither looked at the other.

Both looked inside.

The vault…

Was empty.

Rows of steel shelves stretched into darkness.

Dust covered almost everything.

Except one pedestal.

Something had been removed only moments ago.

Velocyte knelt beside it.

“No fingerprints.”

“No explosives.”

“The lock was opened legitimately.”

Rasheed examined the floor.

One set of footprints.

Heavy boots.

Walking.

Not running.

“He wasn’t in a hurry.”

Velocyte looked up.

“You noticed that too.”

Rasheed simply nodded.

A metallic click echoed behind them.

Both speedsters spun.

A small projector rolled across the floor.

It activated by itself.

Blue static filled the room.

Then…

The masked bank robber appeared.

Only a recording.

“If you’re seeing this…”

“…then you’re exactly where I wanted you.”

His voice was calm.

Measured.

“You’ve spent the last several weeks chasing Chrona fragments.”

“You assumed they were the objective.”

He chuckled.

“They were merely the distraction.”

The image shifted.

An old photograph appeared.

Three scientists stood beside an enormous machine.

One face was unmistakable.

David Adewale.

Another was the Librarian.

The third…

Burned away.

Rasheed froze.

His father’s photograph.

Here?

The recording continued.

“Twenty years ago…”

“…something was hidden beneath this city.”

“We’ve just reclaimed the first piece.”

The projector shut off.

Silence.

Velocyte looked at the empty pedestal.

“What was stored here?”

Rasheed answered without thinking.

“I don’t know.”

But inside…

His pulse quickened.

Someone else knew about Project Chrona.

Suddenly—

Police boots thundered down the stairwell.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Flashlights flooded the vault.

The officers stopped.

Two speedsters.

An open vault.

No robbers.

The captain frowned.

“What happened here?”

Velocyte immediately stepped forward.

“The suspects escaped through a maintenance tunnel.”

“We’ll continue the pursuit.”

The captain nodded.

“Understood.”

No questions.

No hesitation.

Helix’s hero had already earned their trust.

Rasheed quietly stepped into the shadows.

No one stopped him.

No one even noticed him leave.

He wasn’t offended.

Just reminded.

One hero had recognition.

The other had anonymity.

Outside the bank…

Reporters rushed toward Velocyte.

“Cameras are live!”

“How many hostages?”

“Were there casualties?”

“What did they steal?”

Microphones surrounded him.

Omar hesitated.

The Director’s media training echoed in his mind.

“Always reassure the public.”

He looked at the frightened crowd.

Then answered honestly.

“We don’t know what they stole.”

“But we will find it.”

“We’ll keep the city safe.”

It wasn’t rehearsed.

It was sincere.

Watching from across the street, hidden beneath a hood, Rasheed smiled.

“He’s good.”

Not because he was fast.

Because he cared.

That night…

The Librarian was already waiting.

“You saw the photograph.”

Rasheed stopped in the doorway.

“How did you know?”

“Because they finally made their move.”

The old man walked toward the back of the bookstore.

He unlocked a door Rasheed had never noticed before.

Behind it…

A narrow staircase descended underground.

Dark.

Ancient.

The air smelled of dust and machine oil.

The Librarian lit an old lantern.

“I told you knowledge had to be earned.”

He looked back over his shoulder.

“You’ve earned your next lesson.”

Rasheed followed him down.

The staircase seemed endless.

Finally…

They reached a massive circular chamber hidden beneath the bookstore.

The walls were covered in faded blueprints.

Maps.

Equations.

Old newspaper clippings.

At the center stood a scale model of the city.

Thousands of tiny lights glowed beneath its streets.

Rasheed stared in disbelief.

“What is this?”

The Librarian rested a hand on the model.

“This…”

“…is where Project Chrona truly began.”

He pointed to seven glowing points beneath the city.

“There are seven Chrona Vaults.”

Rasheed’s heart skipped.

“The bank…”

“…was Vault One.”

The Librarian nodded.

“And now…”

“For the first time in twenty years…”

“…someone has opened one.”

The lantern flickered.

Its flame bent without wind.

The Librarian’s expression darkened.

“If they open all seven…”

“…the barrier protecting the Chronal Zone will begin to fail.”

Rasheed looked at the glowing map.

Then at the empty space marked…

VAULT TWO

Someone else…

Was already moving.
