Chapter 48: The Cost of Crossing

———
The chamber held its breath.
The Resonator waited.
Its bronze rings rotated in perfect rhythm.
The countdown continued.
03:29:44
Every second sounded louder than the last.
⸻
“I need time.”
Rasheed stepped away from the machine.
“I’m not making this decision now.”
The ancient voice answered immediately.
“Request acknowledged.”
“Guardian granted deliberation.”
“Time remaining… three hours… twenty-nine minutes.”
The countdown resumed.
⸻
“So we actually have time.”
Omar exhaled.
Mr. Vale shook his head.
“No.”
“We have the illusion of time.”
⸻
Nobody argued.
Because they all felt it.
Every passing minute made the chamber colder.
⸻
Elias unfolded an old blueprint from inside his coat.
He spread it across the Resonator.
It wasn’t a map of Lagos.
It was a map of the Chronal Zone.
Or rather…
The parts David had managed to chart before the accident.
Large portions were blank.
Others were covered with handwritten warnings.
DO NOT ENTER
TEMPORAL FRACTURE
POINT OF NO RETURN
Near the center…
One location had been circled repeatedly.
The Bridge.
⸻
David’s handwriting covered the margin.
Every crossing demands balance.
If one life returns…
Something else must remain.
⸻
Rasheed’s chest tightened.
“What does that mean?”
No one answered.
⸻
Vale finally broke the silence.
“It means the Chronal Zone doesn’t take.”
“It trades.”
⸻
Silence.
⸻
“If David crosses…”
Vale continued.
“…the bridge may demand another anchor.”
Rasheed frowned.
“Another anchor?”
“The one who authorizes the crossing.”
⸻
Omar looked at Rasheed.
“You.”
⸻
The realization hit like a freight train.
If Rasheed brought David home…
He might take David’s place.
⸻
“No…”
Elias whispered.
“We never proved that.”
Vale nodded.
“No.”
“But neither did we disprove it.”
⸻
Rasheed stared at the blueprint.
His father had spent twenty years trying to survive.
Now…
His own choice could trap him forever.
⸻
Far away…
Inside the Chronal Zone…
David reached the edge of an endless crimson cliff.
Floating islands drifted beneath him.
Fragments of broken clocks hung in the sky.
The ticking never stopped.
He looked across the abyss.
In the distance…
A bridge of crimson light slowly formed.
“It’s beginning.”
⸻
He took one step forward.
Then stopped.
Someone was already standing on the bridge.
Only a silhouette.
Motionless.
Waiting.
⸻
David’s expression darkened.
“You got here first.”
The figure didn’t answer.
It simply turned…
As if it had been expecting him all along.
⸻
Back on Earth…
Helix Dynamics was no longer waiting.
The Director addressed a room full of senior officers.
“The Resonator cannot be activated.”
One scientist raised a hand.
“What if David returns?”
The Director answered without hesitation.
“Then we welcome him.”
“And if something else returns?”
Silence.
The Director’s voice became cold.
“We erase the bridge.”
⸻
Dr. Sato looked away.
She knew exactly what that meant.
Destroy the Resonator.
Even if Rasheed was standing beside it.
⸻
Meanwhile…
Omar and Rasheed stood alone near the station entrance.
Neither spoke for several moments.
Finally…
Omar laughed quietly.
“This is weird.”
Rasheed raised an eyebrow.
“What is?”
“I spent months trying to figure out who Red Pulse was.”
“And?”
“I wasn’t expecting someone who worries this much.”
Rasheed chuckled.
“I thought Velocyte would be taller.”
Omar laughed.
“Fair enough.”
For the first time…
They weren’t heroes.
They were just two teenagers.
⸻
Omar’s smile slowly faded.
“You know…”
“If my dad were trapped over there…”
“I’d probably make the same choice you’re thinking about.”
Rasheed looked down.
“I don’t know what I’m thinking anymore.”
Omar nodded.
“Good.”
“The moment you’re certain…”
“…is the moment you’ll stop asking the questions that matter.”
⸻
Back in the chamber…
The countdown continued.
02:58:11
Without warning…
The Resonator emitted another pulse.
The ancient voice returned.
“Warning.”
“A second claimant has reached the Bridge.”
Everyone froze.
Rasheed looked at the machine.
“What does that mean?”
The voice answered.
“Two entities now request passage.”
Silence.
One…
Had to be David.
Which meant…
Someone else had arrived.
The final message echoed through the chamber.
“Guardian…”
“Only one may cross.”
The countdown continued.
02:58:00
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because the choice had just become impossible.
