Chapter 748: The Island That Moves

The beach they had landed on did not stay a beach for long. Within the hour, the Hub confirmed what Fraisea had already started to suspect from the strange, steady tremor running through the sand under her boots.
[Third Objective, Part One: Search the island for resources. Upgrade your vessel. Survive what the island sends against you.]
[Time Remaining: 24:00:00]
[Note: This island is in motion.]
"In motion," Ainen repeated, looking down at ground that felt as solid as any ground he had ever stood on. "The whole island. Moving."
"Feel it," Fraisea said, palm flat against a boulder. "It’s not drifting like driftwood drifts. Something underneath is carrying it. A current, or something bigger than a current." She looked up the green slopes toward the cloud-wrapped mountain at the island’s heart. "We should assume it’s going somewhere on purpose."
Rudra had already turned from the water to the treeline, and the calm settled over him the way it always did before real work. "Then we do what we did on the last island, and we do it faster. Marcus."
Marcus split the kingdom the same way he had before, with a year of practice behind it now instead of a single desperate day. Rudra and Gopu took the build. Almond took materials. Lily took the hidden things. Ainen took processing. The rest of the family spread out to guard the work, and the counter began falling.
This island was not soft palewood and glassy crab shell. This island had teeth in the ground itself.
---
Almond found the ore an hour into the search, in a ravine cut deep into the island’s northern slope, black seams running through the grey rock like veins of frozen night. He knelt and read it, and something in the reading made him go very still.
"This isn’t just heavy," he said slowly. "It’s dense the way a held breath is dense. Duskiron. I’ve never worked it before, but the essence in it wants one thing badly. It wants to hit something."
"Then it’s found its calling," Gopu rumbled, already hauling a chunk of it free with a claw the size of a shield. "Ram spurs. Cannon frames. This is what a hull needs to stop apologizing for being in someone’s way."
The ravine did not give up its ore politely.
The ground under the mining party shuddered on the second hour, and the shudder was not the island’s own steady tremor. It was something moving beneath the seam itself, and the rock split open in a spray of black gravel as a creature the length of three wagons hauled itself up out of its burrow, plated in stone the same grey as the ravine walls, jaws wide enough to take a man in one bite.
"Quarry wyrm," Hiroshi called, already moving, Maya a half step behind him with her patterns already forming. "It’s guarding the vein."
"Then it should have posted a sign," Silvester said, and threw himself into the fight with the easy grin of a man who had faced worse for less reason.
The wyrm was strong and blind and furious, and it was also, in the end, only one creature against a family that had spent twenty days sharpening itself into something sharper than it had ever been. Maya’s interlocking patterns turned its charges into wasted effort. Hiroshi found the seam between its plates on the second exchange and did not waste a third finding it again. Almond read its essence mid-fight, called out the soft place at the base of its skull, and the wyrm went down with a groan that shook loose gravel for a hundred paces.
"Its heart is a crystal," Almond said, crouching over the fallen wyrm with something close to fascination. "Duskiron essence, concentrated. This is a weapon core, not a curiosity." He looked up the ravine at the black seam still running deep into the rock. "There’s more where this came from. A lot more."
---
The camp took its own attack while the mining party worked, because the island, it turned out, did not limit its teeth to the ground.
Kayla caught the first shadow crossing the sun at the fourth hour, high and fast, and by the time the whole flock came screaming down out of the cloud-wrapped peak, Natalia’s ranged lines were already rising to meet them.
Razor-wings, someone named them on the fly, because that was exactly what they were, bat-shaped and edged along every wing-bone, diving on the half-built hull and the stores stacked around it with a hunger that suggested they had been watching the whole camp for longer than anyone liked to think about.
Saffa met the first wave with a field of ice spikes rising straight up out of the ground, skewering three fliers before they finished their dive. Natalia’s volleys thinned the rest, and where a few slipped through, Kayla’s support lattices turned their dives aside just enough to save the timber they were aiming for.
It was not an easy hour. The razor-wings kept coming in waves that never quite broke, testing the perimeter for the gap that never opened, and by the time the flock finally gave up and scattered back toward the mountain, the camp’s shields were a field of broken wing-blades and the family’s nerves were stretched thin and taut.
"That’s twice now," Natalia said, catching her breath against the half-finished hull. "This island doesn’t want a ship leaving it either."
"No island in this event does," Rudra said grimly, driving another duskiron spike into the growing frame. "Keep working. We’re not giving it the choice."
---
By the eighteenth hour, the Chainbreaker wore a different face.
Duskiron ram spurs jutted from her bow, black and cruel, forged by Ashkryon’s molten lattice into a shape Almond had read straight out of the metal’s own hungry want. Twin ballista frames rose along her rails, strung with sinew from the quarry wyrm and loaded with duskiron bolts that Ainen had, with characteristic thoroughness, also tested for their edibility and declared regrettably inedible.
The wyrm’s crystal heart sat at the center of it all, sunk into a housing Gopu had built amidships, and when Almond fed the first trickle of essence into it, the whole ship seemed to settle deeper into itself, steadier, hungrier, ready.
"She’s not just a ship that floats anymore," Gopu said, running one claw along the new ram spur with an engineer’s satisfaction. "She’s a ship that bites back."
At the twenty-third hour, the island’s steady tremor changed. The whole ground shifted under their feet, a long slow lean, and Fraisea’s head snapped up from the water she had been reading.
"It’s turning," she said. "The whole island is turning toward something."
They felt the impact before they saw its cause, a deep grinding shudder that ran up through the mountain and out to the shore, stone meeting stone somewhere beyond the treeline. The Hub lit the sky a moment later, and every member of the family stopped what they were doing to read it.
[Third Objective, Part One Complete: Vessel upgraded. Island survived.]
[Third Objective, Part Two: This island has connected with another. An opposing Kingdom’s forces now share this land. Destroy their vessel before the deadline. If neither vessel is destroyed within the time limit, both Kingdoms will be eliminated.]

For a moment nobody spoke. Then Marcus, reading the notice a second time to be sure of it, said what everyone was already thinking.
"We don’t get to just avoid them," he said. "Sit here and wait, and we both lose anyway."
"Then we don’t sit here," Big D said, and there was something almost eager in the old cracked voice. "Scout them. Now."
---
The other kingdom’s camp lay across a shallow saddle of black rock where the two islands had ground together, and by the time Rudra’s scouts brought back a clear picture, the Chainbreaker’s crew had a name for their new enemy.
The Kaldrath Dominion flew a banner of red and iron, and their ship, drawn up on the far shore, was built for exactly one purpose. She was low, heavy, and bristling, more weapon than vessel, with a ram spur twice the size of the Chainbreaker’s new one and cannon ports lining both flanks where the Regalons had ballista frames.
"They found ore too," Gopu observed, studying the far ship through the glass. "More of it than us, and less patience for anything that isn’t a weapon."
