Chapter Thirty-Four — The Queen’s Bath
2 weeks ago · 8 min read
As they entered the bathing chamber, warm steam drifted from the sunken pool of polished stone, casting a soft sheen across their skin. The air was rich with the fragrance of lotus and rose, their scents mingling gently with the rising mist.
Golden lamplight danced across the walls as six attendants waited silently.
Shubad went first.
Two attendants stepped forward in silence, carefully loosening the jeweled clasps at her shoulders before lifting the garment away.
She remained motionless beside the steaming pool, carrying the quiet grace and mature beauty of a woman who had borne a child.
Her breasts hung heavy and rounded, swaying with a lush, pendulous weight that spoke of real life and time. The dark, thick nipples had grown larger with motherhood, velvety areolas that begged to be traced with a fingertip or tongue. Below them, her belly was soft and rounded, no longer flat but warmly padded, marked with delicate silvery stretch lines that shimmered faintly in the light.
Those gentle curves flared dramatically into generous, womanly hips, flowing down into thick, plush thighs.
Zephyr’s breath caught.
She looks like Elara did , he thought. Not broken by time — deepened by it.
Shubad stepped into the pool, the water rising around her curves. For a moment she simply stood there, eyes closed, letting the heat soak into her weary body. Then she turned slightly, and her gaze met Zephyr’s across the steam. There was grief there… but also a quiet, almost surprised awareness.
Saphira disrobed next, elegant and confident, slipping into the water beside her sister.
“Your turn, Spark,” Saphira murmured, a small smile playing on her lips. “The Queen has invited you. Refusing would be… discourteous.”
Zephyr undressed under the watchful eyes of both women. He felt exposed — not just physically, but in the way his body was already responding. His cock hung heavy and half-hard as he stepped down into the warm water between them.
For a time, neither spoke.
Attendants worked a fragrant cleansing paste over their skin while others poured warm water from a bronze ewer, washing it away. The quiet was broken only by the soft splash of water against polished stone.
Their hands glided reverently over Shubad’s rounded swells, lifting and massaging them with slow, careful strokes. Shubad let out a long, shaky breath.
“He killed three men before the arrow took him,” Shubad whispered. A single tear slipped down her cheek. She didn’t bother wiping it away.
"What of Umma now?" Saphira asked as the attendants worked the fragrant cleansing paste over her skin.
Shubad opened her eyes slowly. "The captains and council tried to hold the city."
"If Umma fractures now, Lagash will not stop at your borders," Saphira said.
Zephyr couldn’t stop staring at Shubad. The same tenderness he had once felt tracing Elara’s cesarean scar now stirred violently for this grieving queen.
Shubad met his gaze without flinching. “You have looked at me the same way more than once, Spark,” she said. “Now tell me... whose face do you think you see?”
“Yes,” Zephyr’s throat tightened. "Not in every way... but enough that I looked twice."
Shubad studied him for a long moment. "Was she a queen?"
Before Zephyr could answer, Saphira glanced over with a faint smile. "Or perhaps the High Priestess?"
Zephyr shook his head. "Neither."
Saphira's smile widened. "So Spark wandered the world collecting women."
Shubad watched him a moment longer but did not press.
With a subtle wave of her hand, Saphira dismissed the attendants. All six bowed in unison and quietly withdrew, leaving the three of them alone.
Saphira leaned slightly to her sister. "You have not lowered your shoulders since you arrived."
Shubad gave a tired smile. "Queens seldom have that luxury."
The words lingered in the warm air.
Zephyr looked toward Shubad. Only now did he notice how rigid she sat, every muscle across her neck and shoulders held tight beneath the water.
He hesitated. "May I?"
Shubad frowned. "May you... what?"
"Your shoulders," Zephyr said. "They're carrying more than they should."
Shubad looked at him in mild confusion. "You can feel that?"
He gave a small nod. "It might help."
Saphira's lips curved. "The Spark has many strange customs."
Shubad's gaze drifted between the two of them. "My husband has not yet been mourned."
Zephyr immediately inclined his head. "Then forgive me."
He took a step back.
A heartbeat passed.
"Wait."
He stopped.
Shubad watched him for another moment. Then she turned slowly, the water rippling around her as she offered him her back. "Very well."
Zephyr moved behind her with deliberate care. He rested his hands lightly upon her shoulders, waiting. When she did not object, he began with the gentlest pressure.
The skin beneath his fingers was unlike anything he expected. It was astonishingly clear, almost impossibly.
No faded scars.
No uneven patches where old wounds had healed.
No insect bites scratched raw.
Beside the silver marks around her belly, there was not even the tiny blemishes that seemed inevitable on every person he'd ever known.
He worked carefully along the base of her neck, never rushing, letting the tension ease little by little beneath his thumbs.
A quiet sigh escaped her before she could stop it.
Her eyes opened at once, almost embarrassed by the sound.
Saphira noticed.
She said nothing.
Instead, she reached for a cup of watered wine, smiling.
His gaze lingered only a moment before lifting. Only then did the comparison strike him. The two women only share the same striking eyes. Everything else was different.
Saphira's features were softer, her complexion darker, her beauty commanding and deliberate.
Shubad's face carried sharper lines and a quiet symmetry that felt almost... effortless.
As his thumbs worked gently into the tight muscles, Shubad leaned back into his touch with a quiet sigh that sent heat rushing through him. "Such skill is not common…Where did you acquire it?"
Zephyr swallowed hard, painfully aware of how hard he had become beneath the water. "Life teaches many things."
Shubad slowly turned her head to look at him.
Their eyes met.
For the briefest instant, something inside Zephyr tightened.
It wasn't her gaze. It was the impossible certainty that, through those eyes, something immeasurably older had noticed him.
Then Shubad blinked.
The feeling vanished.
She looked at him with nothing more than quiet curiosity.
Zephyr forced the thought aside. Too little sleep, he told himself.
Shubad shifted. His hand brushed the soft skin of her outer curve of breast. She paused, then spoke in a low, calm voice.
“Spark… Even while you tend to a widow’s sorrow, your manhood is hard. Do you believe a queen fails to notice what stands before her?”
Zephyr’s face grew warm. “My apologies, Queen… I meant no disrespect.”
From beside them, Saphira pressed her lips together, trying to hold back a laugh. She failed, and a soft chuckle escaped.
“Sister, you find this amusing?”
Saphira looked away, still smiling. “I know Spark better than most.”
When he leaned in to reach a tight knot higher on her back, the swollen head of his cock touched the skin where her hip curved. He fought the urge, jaw tight, breathing controlled.
Shubad did not move away. She stayed still as his fingers worked deeper. Her breathing grew slower and deeper.
After a long silence, Shubad let out a long breath. The hardness in her shoulders had finally begun to loosen.
“That is enough,” she said. “Your hands have served their purpose.”
She turned slowly in the water. Their eyes met. Zephyr stepped back, his erection still obvious beneath the surface.
Shubad looked at him with quiet dignity. “The weight on my shoulders feels lighter. You have given me some peace tonight.”
She clapped her hands once. The attendants returned at once, carrying clean linens and robes. They helped Shubad and Saphira out of the pool. Water ran down her breasts and hips as she stood.
Saphira rose beside her, graceful and silent.
Shubad looked back at Zephyr as the attendants wrapped a fine robe around her. “This helped me. Come again when I call for you. My body and spirit both need it.”
Zephyr bowed his head.
Shubad gave him one final look, then left the chamber.
Zephyr stayed in the water when Saphira leaned close to him from outside the pool. “You realize you’ve just earned my sister’s trust in a single breath…”
She smiled. “So… you ease one queen’s burden and forget the other sits right beside you.”
Zephyr exhaled. “You don’t look like you need easing.”
Saphira rubbed her chin. “Careful. That sounded like praise.”
“It wasn’t meant as one.” Zephyr started to come out of the pool.
“Even better.” She turned and walked off, satisfied.
Later, when Ur had settled into its evening silence. Shubad stayed within her sister's grand household, where Saphira's name carried a weight few in Ur could ignore, second only to that of the Queen herself.
Zephyr was given a guest chamber overlooking the inner courtyard. When he emerged, he found Shubad standing near the edge of the chamber, wrapped in a fresh linen cloth, her damp hair falling over her shoulders.
Zephyr hesitated before speaking. “I wanted to ask you something.”
Shubad looked up. “You already have.”
He gave a faint shake of his head. “Earlier… when I was helping you. I noticed something.”
Her expression didn’t change, but her attention sharpened. “About me.”
He chose his words carefully. “Your skin… it doesn’t carry marks the way others do. Not even small ones. It’s… unusually clean.”
Shubad studied him for a long moment. “So you noticed.”
Zephyr didn’t respond.
She turned her gaze toward the water basin. “It has always been like that.”
A faint exhale left her.
“When I was a child, I would fall from the olive trees behind my father’s house. My knees would bleed. My arms would bruise.”
Her fingers traced the edge of the linen at her shoulder. “But by the next day… it was as if it had never happened.”
Zephyr frowned slightly. “Does anyone or Saphira know?”
Shubad’s gaze dropped. “No. She thinks I am simply… fortunate.”
Silence stretched again.
She adjusted her robe. “My grief is the same,” she added. “It comes… and then it leaves sooner than it should.”
Zephyr shook his head. “That must be difficult.”
Something flickered in her expression. “It is worse than difficult. I am afraid one day I will forget what it means to be broken.”
Neither of them spoke after that.
Outside, the canal water moved slowly through the dark. Inside, Zephyr and Shubad remained unaware of the whispers already beginning to take shape at Saphira’s command.
