Chapter 3: Awakening as Tharia

3 weeks ago · 7 min read

Birdsong slammed into her sensitive ears like someone had cranked the forest volume to eleven. Cool river moss and morning dew kissed bare skin. Tharia’s tail curled around her leg like the damn thing had strong opinions. A breeze brushed her thighs and—

'Wait. Why can I feel that breeze… everywhere?'

Tharia's eyes snapped open. Four years in this body and mornings still hit different. Her ears twitched independently, one locking onto rustling undergrowth, the other tracking a bird that had gone suspiciously quiet.

She stretched lazily, arching her back. Her tail uncurled with a slow, pleasurable swish that sent warm tingles racing up her spine.

'Okay but seriously, why does everything feel EXTRA today? The grass is grass-ing too hard. My hair is hair-ing aggressively. Even my tail…'

Her tail flicked.

The motion felt way too good that it made her ears flatten. 'Nope. Not thinking about that. Absolutely not.'

Then a sharp splinter of memory stabbed through her head — stale tea, glossy book pages, broader hands that weren’t hers turning a page. It vanished just as fast.

Tharia sat up fast, blinking hard. The forest looked exactly the same. Her tail flicked in mild confusion.

"...Huh?"

No answers came. Only birdsong and the loud, steady thump of her own heartbeat. She pressed a hand to her chest. Her qi felt… weird. Like something that had been sleeping for years had just rolled over and woken up cranky and full of energy.

One second she was reaching for her storage ring, thinking about breakfast. The next—

System Status:

[SYSTEM AWAKENING: CHAOS GUIDELINE 1.0]

Host: Tharia | Age: 18

Status: Reawakened

[TECHNIQUE ANALYSIS]

Active: Illusory Raiment (Rank: F)

Stability: 12% (Dangerously Translucent)

Note: Mastery has reset due to internal Chaos spike. Please focus, or prepare for an unplanned 'Nature Study.'

[collapse]

Tharia stared.

Blinked.

Stared harder.

A huge, stupid grin slowly took over her face. “A system?” Her left ear twitched. “A real status screen? In my actual life?”

'Holy shit — I read about this! The isekai thing! This is actually happening to me?!'

“Okay,” she told the floating runes, ears perked high. “I can definitely work with this.”

The System didn’t reply. Rude.

Then her brain caught up to the number.

12%.

She looked down.

Her illusion robe was almost completely see-through. Like she could see grass through it see-through.

A morning breeze picked that exact second to roll through the clearing.

“Eep!”

Tharia yelped and frantically grabbed at the flickering fabric as pink light stuttered across her skin. The robe kept dissolving and reforming while she danced in place making small, undignified noises.

She grabbed at the fading seams, face flooding with heat, and forced her qi into the illusion with the kind of focus that only genuine embarrassment can produce.

“Why is my own power doing this to me?!”

System:

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

Illusion Proficiency: 0.1%

Reward: +2 Chaos Essence for 'Audacious Exposure.'

Note: The local wildlife is unimpressed. The System, however, appreciates the commitment to freedom.

[collapse]

“I am trying !” she shrieked at the glowing text, frantically pumping more qi into the stupid technique while doing an awkward crouch-dance thing. ‘This is a disaster!’

The System said nothing. She could feel it judging her in silence.

She tried to force it thicker. The illusion thickened for half a second… then promptly shrank into a tiny tube top and barely-there panties.

“No! Not like that!”

She panicked and tried to make it longer. The hem shot up even higher, threatening to become a glorified belt.

“AHHH!”

Another desperate push. This time it turned completely transparent again except for two glowing heart-shaped patches that somehow made everything worse.

Tharia made a strangled noise and spun in a circle like that would help.

System:

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

Warning : Repeated failed attempts are lowering stability further.

Recommendation : Stop panicking and actually focus, gremlin.

[collapse]

“I was concentrating!” she snapped, face hotter than a forge.

It took another full minute of pure panic and qi focus before the illusion finally stabilized into her favorite short sleeveless top, hem barely covering her thighs. By Palace standards this was practically criminal, and that was exactly why she loved it.

She stepped over to the spirit-pool and crouched. The girl staring back had violet hair, faintly glowing eyes, and one very smug white-tipped tail.

Tharia tilted her head. The reflection copied her perfectly.

'Cute. Honestly… almost a crime.'

For one treacherous second the robe went completely translucent in the reflection. She saw everything while feeling the cool morning air on her bare skin at the same time.

Her ears slammed flat. Her face burned crimson. Her tail froze mid-swish.

She snapped the illusion back into place with way more force than necessary.

“We are never talking about that,” she hissed at the pool.

The water rippled, completely unmoved.

But as she stared a moment longer, another flash hit. Sharper this time. A tall figure with broad shoulders, and a deep familiar voice laughing. The image fractured. Suddenly she was staring at herself again— small, soft, violet-haired, and way too cute for someone who used to be someone else entirely.

Tharia blinked hard, pressing her fingers to her temple. 'What the hell was that? Why do I keep seeing… him? And why does it feel like I’m missing something big?'

Her stomach growled.

She shook her head. “Later. Breakfast first.”

She stomped over to her storage ring, yanked out some dried rations, and ate standing up like a savage, aggressively chewing as if the jerky had personally offended her.

System:

[CHAOS PROMPT]

Identity Sync: User is beginning to prioritize 'Sensory Liberty' over 'Social Propriety.'

Bonus: +5 Chaos Essence.

[collapse]

"Oh now you're supportive," she muttered through a mouthful of jerky.

After eating, she pulled out her wooden comb. Sitting cross-legged in the grass, she worked through her violet hair first, then moved to the important part: her tail.

Each careful stroke calmed the restless chaos in her veins. The heavy, silky fur settled bright and smooth behind her.

'Okay. I'm fine. It's fine. Just a wardrobe malfunction. Happens to everyone.'

Pause.

'Okay it probably doesn't happen to everyone THAT badly but still.'

She finished grooming, put the comb away, and stood up. Her robe flickered once. She glared at it, and it settled down immediately.

"Good," she told it. "Behave."

[Tail maintenance complete. You almost look presentable. Almost.]

Tharia snorted. “Shut up.”

Feeling playful and extremely petty, she decided to show off a little. Just a tiny illusion. Super easy. She'd make the tip of her tail look extra fluffy and luxurious.

She focused.

The illusion formed… then immediately ballooned into a gigantic glowing dandelion puff the size of her torso that wagged behind her like the world’s most ridiculous flag.

She stared at it, ears pinned back.

'Okay… that was not the look I was going for.'

She tried to shrink it. It turned sparkling rainbow instead. Spinning. Sparkling. Rainbow.

“WHY—”

The System finally chimed in again.

[Fascinating. At this rate you’ll achieve ‘Fashion Disaster’ before you reach Foundation Veins.]

Tharia flicked the failed illusion away with a huff, cheeks slightly pink. “I said shut up.”

Fine. Baby steps. She'd start smaller.

She spotted a blue butterfly drifting past. Easy target. She'd just create one simple duplicate illusion. Make it look like two butterflies. That's it.

Focus.

The illusion formed… sort of. Two butterflies appeared. Then four. Then they started spinning wildly like drunk fireflies. One flew straight into her face. She flinched and swatted at nothing.

"I hate this. I hate everything about this."

"Oh now you're quiet?!"

She took a breath. Okay. Walking. She could walk. Walking was safe.

First step: smooth.

Second step: still good.

Third step: her tail snagged hard on a low-hanging briar.

“Ngh—!”

She spun fast. The briar held. Her focus shattered.

The illusion robe exploded into sparks. One second it was there, the next it was gone, leaving her completely exposed in the middle of the thorns. Tharia yelped and wrestled her traitorous tail with both hands while the robe desperately tried to reform: first as a pathetic scarf, then thigh-high stockings only, then nothing at all.

'Kill me. Just kill me now. This is not how I wanted to start the day!'

A fat squirrel on the branch watched the entire disaster with wide, extremely judgmental eyes.

She finally ripped her tail free with a sharp yank. The sudden jerk sent her stumbling, and the robe flickered one last time, giving her a completely backless dress for two humiliating heartbeats before she slammed it back into her favorite short sleeveless top.

Tharia pointed dramatically at the squirrel, cheeks red.

“No one saw that!”

The squirrel chittered once. It sounded exactly like laughter.

Then it bolted into the leaves.

Tharia watched the squirrel vanish into the leaves. She let out a long breath, then a big, unstoppable grin took over anyway.

'This is going to be FUN.'

She tucked a strand of violet hair behind her ear, rolled her shoulders, and strutted deeper into the forest, tail swishing like it owned the whole damn place

System:

[HOST ORIENTATION: ONGOING]
