CH 1: Essences and Getting Rich

3 weeks ago · 23 min read

“So you're telling me that my father was the Primordial Elder God King of this Metaverse and now he's dead and left me something in his will?” Lex asked the man made of golden galaxies.

“Absolutely, he had many other children too but since they were all completely connected to him or rather dependent on his existence they're all gone now. Except you since you lived in a different Metaverse.” the swirling mass of gold replied.

“So what do I get exactly?” Lex asked.

“Technically you'll inherit everything he had but for starters you've to prove to be worthy of all that. To do that he has the task that you conquer the complete Metaverse. Of course, he doesn't expect you to do it without anything. You'll start of with 3 random Essences and for every Large Conquest that you succeed in, you'll get another Essence.” The wibly wobbly ball of golden goo explained.

“What are these Essences you keep talking about?” Lex asked.

“An Essence is a part of reality that was used to make that Metaverse. Controlling such a reality makes you an absolute peak in that particular section. Of course, there are many limitations on said reality too, there's also the capability you have. Anyways you'll find out. Now, I'll leave you into that Metaverse, where your father's preparations will take effect and you'll start receiving whatever he has decided. Lastly, if you ever need a layer in the Court of Reality, do choose our company. Thank you.” A golden light erupted as Lex found himself on top of a building in New York.

How did he know it's New York… he could clearly see the Statue of Liberty from there.

As luck would have it… or maybe his father would have it, he found that in his coat pockets, there were three bottles.

Thankfully, his mind also acquired the information about these three bottles. How was it happening, Lax had no idea. He also had no idea if this was all fake or maybe just a ploy or both.

But then again, life before today had been boring… so much so that even this most unexpected situation was making his excited. He was probably in a parallel world and will be getting powers, how cool is that alone.

Opening the cork of the first bottle, he drank it in a single gulp. Immediately, his mind was filled with complete information about it.

Essence of Wealth

By drinking this essence, you have become the wealthiest person alive.

An independent bank account is opened to your name with infinite funding. A credit card appears in your hand that is connected to this bank account. This account is hacker proof and only you can withdraw money from this account and use this card. You can use this to withdraw money from any banks and atm without any charges. The atm and bank clerks will not question or wonder about the bank account or credit card. This bank account is available to you in all worlds and universes where banks exist. The credit card will appear next to you if it's ever stolen or lost.

You can create valid currency out of thin air if you can’t find a bank, atm, or use your credit card.

You can spend however much you like without worrying about the economy crashing with how much money is being circulated into it. It will actually help it and no one will question where the extra money is coming from. The extra money will sort itself out after a couple of weeks and disappear without it affecting anyone or hurting the economy.

No one will question or investigate where you are getting your money from or how you are buying your things. You could buy entire companies and no one will care or investigate it.

You can create precious metals and substances with 100% purity. The value of these precious metals and substances will never decrease if you ever decide to sell or hand them out in bulks.

You won’t have to worry about the IRS or other government agency that deals with money and taxes. They will never investigate you about your money and will never tax you. No one will ever question you about this.

With Black Card with purple and gold intricate design that appeared in his hands as well as the ability to just randomly produce any kind of currency or even rare metals, he was immediately extremely excited.

As before coming over to this new world, he used to be just some guy who worked in a small company in Baltimore, earning only enough to survive never to thrive.

Not having money had been his biggest problem most of his life, especially after his father died and he had to start working early to help his mother. Who too died before he even turned twenty.

Oh yes, he was indeed adopted, he had only found that after his father's death. Still, he did love his parents, they were amazing and did everything they did for him even if he was somewhat of a beat in his teen years.

Having Unlimited wealth, he simply didn't know what to do with it… well he did have many plans from buying a villa to going on a world trip and all that but he decided to think about all that a bit later as there were still two bottles in his hands that could potentially be as useful as this one.

Essence of the Transcendent Self

You gain a body that is the peak of your species mentally, physically, and spiritually sculpted to your tastes. You are immortal and undying, and will not succumb to the ravages of age and can continue to live in perpetuity not requiring any form of sustenance to live. Your body will never degrade, decay, or weaken even if you sit alone in a void for eons. This also makes you immune to all poison, disease, mundane or supernatural as well as any form of corruption or curse. You have limitless amounts of stamina and life force.  Any supernatural energies you can manipulate or tap into are internalized allowing you to generate those energies independently of the original source. Any supernatural energies you possess are incredibly pure and always filled to capacity allowing you theoretically limitless endurance with any powers or techniques using those energies. Any energies that come with negative side effects of their use or existence are blunted so you won't be accelerating entropy of the universe by harnessing the cosmic abyss or twelve you might have crammed into your body unless you want to. You are also self-cleaning, and dirt and grime roll right off of your body, you will never smell bad either, at worst being odor neutral. You can alter your appearance at will and can shift between male, female, both or neither or even alter your apparent age near instantaneously.

Your memory is perfect with infinite storage and indexing with potentially limitless trains of thought and multitasking ability as needed. You are immune to all types of mental and spiritual attacks, control, or manipulation. Your mind and spirit will never degrade, decay, or weaken even if you sit alone in a void for eons. You are unique and there is and can never be another version of yourself unless you allow it. You cannot be erased from reality, killed through time travel, or retconned from existing. Your singular existence renders things such as luck, fate, prophesy, narrative force, plot armor and similar things as weak as tissue paper. These things can still function if you allow them too, only surviving within your proximity at your leisure. Your body, mind, and soul is shielded from hostile or detrimental form changing, body control, or modification from any source including transformations as the result of one of your own powers. You regenerate within seconds from the damage you take and cannot completely die, at worst taking some days to reconstitute from your soul if destroyed completely. You will find that you will always manage to get free of any prison eventually whether it be dropped to the bottom of the ocean chained to a stone or cast into a void between realities, they can’t stop you, only slow you down.

The transcendence of your form means your body and its fluids are extremely valuable in several regards. They act as universally potent reagents and foci for supernatural abilities, your blood could easily substitute for the sacrifice of virgins or the use of one-of-a-kind artifacts to cast a spell or perform a ritual. They are also universally useful in the creation or modification of items, able to enhance the essential qualities of anything they are used with bringing it closer to an ideal perfected form as well as repairing and purging any corruption or weakness from its form. Finally, it acts as a universal panacea and can supply all the nutrients that an individual needs to survive. It will re-energize them, filling their stores of energy, stamina, and heal any injuries, correcting flaws, weaknesses, or impurities to their mind, body or soul. It will even repair the damage of age and restore a person to their prime and purge any corruption or curses from their system. This can even be used to revive the dead regardless of how long they have passed on even those who have been reduced to ashes or fragments. You can also use this to share lesser versions of your transcendence to others, improving them across the board. Others can only benefit from these properties that you allow, cutting you to pieces or collecting samples from you will render only impotent material with a much weaker effect. Any material from yourself that hasn’t been refined or used in some manner such as working it into an artifact, potion, or healing someone will quickly and harmlessly dissipate into the aether as long as you wish it to. Nothing of your body will ever rot or decay otherwise.

You have infinite and unbreakable willpower, and you are able to forcibly mute or shut down feelings of fear, guilt, anger, and other emotions so you can keep going even if it should be gut-wrenching to a normal person. You can keep going even if your body is falling apart and breaking at the seams. Getting your head cut off or destroyed is merely an inconvenience as your body could keep fighting until you were damaged to the point of immobility. You retain absolute control over your body under all circumstances as long as that piece is still attached even if it's mangled. You do not feel pain but you still register where you have been damaged.

You have the ability to learn and train in anything you have the capacity for at a blistering rate. You could go from an untrained novice to a master of a profession or set of skills in a few weeks, effectively growing in leaps and bounds to achieve the same sort of prowess it would take others a whole lifetime or more.

This speed increases if you have a teacher or some form of instruction cutting it down to under half but you can get by just with experimentation on your own and figure it out. Your self-experimentation is self-correcting and you won’t have to worry about accidentally giving yourself lasting injuries, suffering catastrophic failures, or introducing an unnoticed flaw in whatever you develop. You can also bend or even break established rules with things like magic or other supernatural powers with enough improvement.

You can also train others quickly, though they will learn at a much slower rate depending on their aptitude for what you are teaching and possibly teach them any exploits you know.

You are able to bring mind shattering levels of pleasure to any of your partners just by natural talent. Hentai orcs, tentacle monsters, and faceless fat old bastards have nothing on you. You have all the benefits of porn physics on your side when you desire, letting you perform inhuman feats of lewdness.

When it comes to your preferred sex it is not so much a question if you can but if you want to court them. There is no being holy, unholy, eldritch or abstract that you couldn’t eventually get into a relationship with. With the same absolute destruction your presence brings to fate, narratives, and prophesy the red strings that bind lovers together no matter how strong are vulnerable to yourself. You could successfully woo someone that has only ever had eyes for one person, effectively usurping the position of their old partner or even go so far as to drag both into your bed.

You have complete control over your fertility/virility. Neither you or those you have children with will suffer negative effects of pregnancy including delivering offspring. You can set the parameters of what your children will inherit from you and the mother including any particular abilities, physical characteristics, and even skills or genetic memories. None of your descendants will ever suffer from any genetic flaws or complications related to their makeup. They will instead have idealized genetics, inheriting all of the best traits while outright expunging the worse ones leaving them very impressive specimens regardless of their heritage. Your offspring have a strong genetic loyalty to you, it would take heavy and pointless abuse to see them turn on you.

This time, it was completely different from last time, he changed in many ways within a single moment. From his body evolving to its peak form, his mind opening up to millions of new ideas yet still completely organised and each thought connected yet independent. He became completely aware of himself, his body, how it was changing. Each cell contained limitless energy, any and all injuries, marks, scars were gone as if they never existed. Pains he didn't even remember too were gone. His emotions were too rained in to whatever point he desired.

His sorrow of losing his parents, excitement of getting unlimited money, curiosity of being in a new world, relief of not working his boring job ever again. All emotions were as if in his own control, if he willed it he could dull down any of them.

Many of his bodily functions completely became just for convenience. He could live without breathing, eating, drinking even if blood stopped flowing in his body it'll still work just the same.

His body became clean, from dust of microbes, all gone. His skin as smooth as a baby, yet a lot more durable than any adult. His hair became as silky abd smooth as it was perfect. He smiled as it no longer had the dandruff he had just started having.

He no longer needed to shave or adjust his body hair or nails as he could simply control their growth.

“It seems I've hit the jackpot, unlimited money, immortality, what's next?” He thought to himself as he uncorked tge last bottle and drank it all.

Essence of the Gacha

You have the ability to randomly get one item, or person of importance in fiction per roll.

These things will always appear on cards and can be summoned out of it. However they can’t revert back into cards once done.

You have access to a list where it details every single card, and option in order to narrow down searches.

Cards can be used to increase the strength of a summon item or person, however these cards will be destroyed in the process. This increase is determined by the rarity of the card.

The rarity of cards are determined by the strength and the importance of the being or item.

Items that are summoned through the gatcha will always work no matter what universe you are in, and can never be used against you in any way. These items are always in perfect condition, and will not degrade in any way. They can only be used by you, and the only way for anyone else to use them is that they must have direct permission from you. These items are summonable and will appear by your side no matter what. Items that require things such as energy sources or ammunition will have infinite amounts of them, however you can’t siphon or use them for any other purpose.

People that are summoned through the gatcha will always be loyal to you, no matter what their personality or alignment is and can’t negatively effect, hurt or kill you in any way. If they are ever killed or injured, they will immediately be restored back to full health after the battle is done and return to your side. They can disobey orders that they don’t like so long as these orders don't directly involve you in any way.

You will have a bond relationship with the people you summon and can check anytime what level the relationship is at. Bond relationships start at 0, which means that you are strangers to them, and end with 10, which means that the person is completely in love with you and will do anything for you. Anybody summoned through the gatcha will have a bond relationship of 0. By spending time with them, you can quickly increase your relationship with them to a 10.

You get 1 gatcha point per day. You can get more gatcha points by paying the equivalent of 1 dollar for 1 gatcha point. However, there is a limit to that as you can only spend the equivalent of 100 dollars per month. Don’t want you developing a problem.

You have two modes in the gatcha. The first mode is where you have two options to spend your gacha points: you can spend 3 gacha points which will always gives you a 3 star card or have the chance to get a 4 or higher star card, or you can spend 30 gatcha points which will give you 10 cards, guaranteed to get at least one 3 or higher star person and one 4 or higher star card, however in the beginning you are limited to just getting 3 to 5 star cards. This limitation will gradually disappear as you use the gatcha.  The second is an alternate mode of the first one, where you can get copies of items and people that exist in the universe you are in, however you must pay 6 or 60 gatcha points to summon the cards instead of the 3 or 30 you would normally pay in the first mode, must face the same limitation as the first mode, and can only get cards that exist in that universe. This mode can only work if the universe you are in has 4 to higher star cards that are based on the items and people in it.

At the back of his mind, a simple wheel appeared. He could choose to make the wheel only target the universe he was in and it would normally.

As for the points, he naturally had 101 points. 1 point for today and 100 as the Essence of Wealth automatically recharged his Gacha points.

While he could choose to immediately roll the Gacha, he simply pushed down that impulse and instead focused on his current situation.

He was in an unfamiliar universe and who knew if he even had an identity here. Sure he had a credit card so there has to be some identity connected to it but he wouldn't put past this Essence of Wealth to simply just make the card have no identity at all.

Money can solve almost all problems but you need to know how to use it and being a broke man of the past, he simply had no idea how to use it. He knew he could probably get a fake ID that was so real that it couldn't even be suspected if he paid enough money, which he was indeed willing to pay but where do you even find such people.

As he came down from the building, he noticed some odd things, the time didn't feel right.

“Hey, how much for the newspaper.” He asked a guy he saw was selling newspapers.

12 July 2013…

“Damn, did I got back in time too.. oh well I'm immortal now anyways so maybe just gotta enjoy the time while it lasts.” He thought as he started to go through the paper.

The front page news was about some bombing that happened a few days ago, the article was talking about how The Mandarin had taken responsibility for it once again, this seems to be the fourth such bombing.

Sitting on a bench nearby, he started reading more about it, after all being given such power, he was almost certain that this world wasn't normal. Either it had hidden supernatural elements or who knows maybe there are powerful people who roam the world publicly.

As he was reading, he found a small article which talked about how the police have found alien technology in the hands of a small gang. The article was questioning the handling of alien technology by the government and they failed to clear the aftermath of the battle of New York.

This article alone told him many things, such as an alien invasion happened and by the look of New York, it seemed to have survived it just fine, which means he's dealing with the Sci-fi genre.

Walking down the street, he saw a boutique, thinking about how he'd need a few clothes anyways, so he decided to enter. While it did look like the boutique was only for premium customers as there didn't seem to be any other customers despite it being in such a great area, no one stopped him and thankfully there didn't happen to be any face slapping with his black card or something like that.

Of course, he didn't realise yet that even casually he looked better than most models and his confidence alone was enough to show people he belonged here. Essence of Transcendent Self had affected him in many ways and one such thing was an invisible presence that subtly told people he was important.

“Morning sir, I'm Emily. I'll be helping you today.” A young woman in her early twenties, who appeared beautiful but more importantly extremely well dressed and perfectly postured, greeted him. Confirming his guess that this was indeed a boutique meant for wealthy customers.

“Hi Emily, I'm looking for a few casual outfits as well as some professional wear,” he replied with a smile.

“Of course, sir. Do you have any preferences in mind? Something more modern, classic, minimalist?”

“Honestly? I just need clothes that look good on me. I don't really know much about fashion.”

For a split second she looked mildly surprised before her professional smile returned.

“That's perfectly fine, sir. That's what I'm here for.”

She guided him deeper into the boutique, heels clicking softly against the polished floor. Unlike normal clothing stores, there weren't racks packed tightly together. Every piece seemed deliberately placed, almost like an art display.

Emily glanced at him a few times while pretending not to. The more she looked, the easier her job became.

Tall, broad shoulders, naturally straight posture, sharp jawline, absurdly symmetrical face. Even without the supernatural enhancement from the Essence, he'd probably have looked good in almost anything. With it, the difficult part wasn't finding clothes that suited him, it was finding clothes that didn't make him stand out too much.

“This would work well for you,” she said, pulling out a charcoal overcoat. “Simple, clean lines. It gives a more mature look without seeming overly formal.”

A few minutes later she had already assembled multiple outfits.

Dark fitted jeans with lighter shirts for casual wear.

Neutral colored turtlenecks and coats.

Tailored dress shirts.

Slim professional suits that somehow made him look like the heir to a multinational company.

By the third outfit even he had to admit she was ridiculously good at this.

“You do this professionally or are you secretly a magician?”

That earned a small laugh from her.

“I'll take that as a compliment, sir.”

“It was.”

He eventually stopped checking the price tags entirely after realizing some of the outfits casually cost more than his monthly salary back home. Still, strangely enough, nobody in the boutique seemed concerned when he casually selected several full outfits alongside watches, shoes and accessories.

Emily herself had already unconsciously categorized him as one of those clients. The kind who belonged to a world most people only heard vague rumors about.

“Will that be all for today, sir?” she asked politely once they returned toward the counter.

He gave the collection one final glance before nodding. “Yeah, I think this should be enough for now.”

The moment he placed the matte black card onto the counter, there was an almost imperceptible shift in atmosphere.

Not dramatic.

Just subtle professionalism becoming even more careful professionalism.

The cashier scanned the card once before immediately straightening slightly.

“Of course, sir.”

No delay.

No signature.

No awkward waiting period while the machine processed the payment.

Just instant approval.

Even Emily's eyes briefly flickered toward the unfamiliar logo on the card before her expression smoothly returned to normal. Clearly she recognized it as something expensive even if she didn't know exactly what MU Bank actually was.

After another half hour, one of the staff members arrived to take his measurements so the boutique could tailor and prepare the clothing properly.

“Do you have a preferred delivery address, sir?” Emily asked.

Right.

That was a problem.

“Not yet actually,” he admitted smoothly. “I'm still looking for a hotel.”

That seemed to surprise her slightly.

“A hotel?”

“Just arrived in the city.”

She nodded immediately, not questioning it further.

“In that case, if you'd like privacy and proper service, I'd recommend either The Peninsula or The Four Seasons downtown. The Peninsula is a bit quieter and more personal. Most of our international clients prefer it.”

That sounded expensive enough that he probably should've hesitated.

Instead he simply nodded. “Sounds good.”

“We can hold onto your order until you've settled in,” she added professionally. “Just give us a call later and we'll arrange delivery immediately.”

That honestly made things easier.

“Perfect.”

Emily smiled politely before handing him a sleek black card containing the boutique's contact information in elegant silver lettering.

“If you need anything else, sir, you can contact me directly.”

He accepted the card before glancing once around the boutique. Somehow, without even trying, his life had already started drifting into a world of tailored suits, luxury hotels and personal assistants.

And it had only been a few hours since he'd arrived in this insane world.

By the time he arrived in front of The Peninsula, the sun had already begun dipping lower between the skyscrapers of New York.

The hotel itself didn't look flashy in the way he'd expected from rich people places. There were no giant golden signs or ridiculous decorations trying to scream wealth. Instead everything about it felt... refined.

Quiet confidence rather than loud luxury.

Tall glass windows reflected the evening city lights while uniformed staff moved with smooth efficiency near the entrance. Expensive cars stopped occasionally at the front before valets immediately stepped forward to receive them.

For a brief moment he simply stood there looking at the building.

Back home he'd obviously been inside hotels before. Cheap roadside ones during family trips, a few decent business hotels during college events, even a five star once when his company held a conference.

But this felt different.

Not bigger exactly.

Just... exclusive.

Like the entire place existed slightly apart from normal life.

Still, surprisingly, he didn't feel out of place walking inside. Maybe it was the Essence affecting him again or maybe the boutique experience already changed how he carried himself, but instead of nervousness he mostly felt a strange sense of excitement.

The lobby itself was absurdly elegant.

Soft golden lighting illuminated polished marble floors while quiet piano music drifted through the air. People dressed in expensive suits and dresses sat calmly across the lounge area speaking in low voices while hotel staff moved around with almost mechanical precision.

Everything smelled faintly expensive.

He couldn't even explain that one properly.

Taking a small breath, he walked toward the reception desk.

The receptionist looked up almost immediately, her professional smile perfectly practiced.

“Good evening sir, welcome to The Peninsula. How may I assist you today?”

“I'd like a room.”

“Of course sir. Do you have a reservation with us?”

“I don't.”

Her fingers moved across the keyboard for a few seconds before her expression shifted slightly into something apologetic.

“My apologies sir, but we're currently fully booked tonight.”

Well, that was annoying.

“Nothing available at all?”

“There are a few suites still open,” she admitted carefully, “however those are reserved for our exclusive members and long-term priority guests.”

He glanced briefly around the lobby before looking back at her.

“Well,” he said while pulling out the black card, “if the membership can be bought, I don't think that'll be a problem.”

For a moment she looked like she was about to politely explain that memberships weren't something that could simply be purchased.

Then she saw the card.

The words stopped midway.

It wasn't even dramatic. Her expression just subtly froze for half a second as her eyes focused on the unfamiliar matte black surface and minimalist silver logo.

“…May I see that for a moment, sir?”

“Sure.”

The receptionist accepted the card carefully before sliding it into the terminal.

A second later her posture straightened almost imperceptibly.

Her screen had changed completely.

PRIORITY INTERNATIONAL CLIENT

SPECIAL HANDLING ADVISED

Below that was another line.

MU BANK — VERIFIED ELITE STATUS

The receptionist blinked once before quickly masking her surprise.

“I... apologize, sir. One moment please.”

He simply nodded calmly despite internally having absolutely no idea what was happening.

The receptionist stood up almost immediately.

“Please allow me to get my supervisor.”

A few moments later a man in his forties wearing an immaculate dark suit approached the reception desk. Unlike the younger receptionist, his expression remained perfectly controlled from the very beginning.

“Good evening sir,” he greeted smoothly. “I'm Daniel, the front office manager.”

The receptionist quietly turned the monitor slightly toward him.

Daniel's eyes moved across the screen once.

Then paused.

Not long enough to appear rude, but long enough for something subtle to shift in his expression.

MU Bank.

The name itself was familiar in the strange way certain things were familiar among wealthy circles. Not publicly known exactly, but occasionally mentioned in conversations involving people far above ordinary luxury clientele.

A bank whispered about more than discussed.

The kind associated with individuals important enough that discretion became part of the service itself.

By the time he looked back at Lex, his smile had become noticeably more respectful.

“My apologies for the inconvenience, sir,” Daniel said immediately. “There will be no need for membership verification.”

The receptionist beside him looked slightly surprised but hid it quickly.

Daniel turned fully toward Lex.

“If I may ask, how long were you planning to stay with us?”

“A month maybe,” Lex answered after a brief thought. “Possibly longer.”

“Of course.”

Not even the slightest hesitation.

“We can arrange one of our long-term executive suites immediately.”

Lex honestly had no idea what that meant, but judging from the tone alone it sounded expensive enough that the old him would've started sweating.

Now though?

He just nodded calmly like this was completely normal.

Daniel himself personally handled the rest of the check-in process. Unlike before, nobody asked for additional membership information or tried to explain policies anymore.

The black card alone seemed to have quietly bypassed all of that.

“Will you require assistance with luggage, sir?” Daniel asked politely.

Lex almost laughed at that considering he'd literally arrived in this world wearing sleepwear a few hours ago.

“Not right now.”

“Understood.”

A few moments later Daniel handed him a sleek black keycard embossed with the hotel's silver logo.

“Your suite is on the top residential floor. If you require anything during your stay, simply contact reception directly at any hour.”

There was a faint emphasis on directly.

As if normal hotel procedures no longer quite applied to him.

Another employee soon appeared beside them.

“If you'll follow me, sir.”

Lex nodded before following the employee toward the elevators, passing through the massive lobby once more. This time though, the atmosphere around him felt subtly different.

Staff members became just a little more attentive.

People moved slightly more out of the way.

Nothing obvious.

Just enough to notice if you were paying attention.

The elevator itself required the employee to scan a separate access card before the upper floors became available.

Definitely expensive then.

The ride upward was smooth and nearly silent. By the time the doors finally opened, the atmosphere had changed completely from the public luxury downstairs.

The upper floor was quieter.

Softer lighting. Thicker carpets. Far fewer rooms.

Private.

The employee eventually stopped in front of a large dark wooden door before using the keycard to unlock it for him.

The moment Lex stepped inside, he genuinely froze for a second.

The “suite” was bigger than his old apartment.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the glowing New York skyline while warm ambient lighting illuminated a living area that looked straight out of a luxury magazine. There was an actual dining area, a fully stocked kitchen, a bedroom large enough to fit his old apartment's living room and a marble bathroom that probably cost more than a car.

“If there's anything you require, sir, please inform us immediately. Your stay package already includes all hotel services.”

Lex barely even registered the rest.

A few hours ago he'd been wandering New York in borrowed confidence and expensive clothes trying to figure out whether this world was insane.

Now he was standing inside a suite meant for people rich enough that entire hotels quietly changed their rules for them.
