The church bell echoed across Hollow Creek.
Once.
Clear.
Familiar.
The sound traveled through quiet streets, over weathered rooftops, past the old water tower, and into the hearts of people who had no idea why they suddenly stopped what they were doing.
Some smiled without reason.
Others looked toward the sky.
It felt as though the town itself had taken a deep breath after a very long sleep.
Far beyond the Tree of Readers, Noah felt the golden leaf in his hand dissolve into warm light.
The Library of Beginnings faded.
The endless branches disappeared.
When the light settled, he stood once more upon the familiar road leading into Hollow Creek.
Beside him stood Aiden.
His friend blinked in surprise.
"You’ve been gone for only a second."
Noah stared.
"A second?"
Aiden laughed.
"You touched your bracelet, froze for a heartbeat, and now you’re looking at me like you’ve crossed the universe."
Noah smiled quietly.
"I think I did."
The afternoon sun bathed the town in gentle gold.
Children rode bicycles through the streets.
Mrs. Holloway swept the steps outside the bakery.
Father Gideon rang the church bell before greeting a passing family.
Marcus repaired an old pickup truck outside his garage while Lena carried supplies toward the clinic.
Everything looked ordinary.
Beautifully ordinary.
The Traveler’s words returned to Noah.
Every story eventually returns home.
Before Noah could speak, a frightened shout echoed from the library across the square.
Someone cried out.
"What is this?"
Aiden and Noah exchanged a glance.
Then they ran.
The little brick library stood exactly as Noah remembered.
Rows of old books.
Wooden tables.
Dust floating through warm sunlight.
But every reader inside had gathered around one elderly man standing near the history shelves.
His hands trembled.
He held an enormous book bound in silver leather.
Its cover bore no author’s name.
Only one title.
Hollow Creek
Noah stopped in the doorway.
His breath caught.
"I’ve never seen that book before," whispered the librarian.
"It wasn’t here yesterday."
The elderly man slowly looked up.
His eyes were wide with confusion.
"I opened it..."
"...and it knew my name."
Silence filled the room.
The silver cover slowly opened by itself.
Its pages turned without wind.
One after another.
Until they stopped at a single Chapter.
Across the top of the page appeared familiar words.
Chapter One
The Night the Sky Turned Red
Noah’s heart pounded.
It was the beginning of the zombie apocalypse.
The page was not merely describing events.
It was recording them exactly as they had happened.
Every conversation.
Every choice.
Every sacrifice.
Every name.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who wrote this?"
No one answered.
The final page of the open Chapter slowly filled with fresh ink.
Not old words.
New ones.
Words appearing at that very moment.
Noah entered the library.
Everyone turned toward him.
The sentence continued writing itself.
He realized the story was still being written.
A cold silence settled over the room.
Aiden stepped beside Noah.
"I don’t like this."
Neither did Noah.
Because stories belonged to the past.
Readers turned pages that had already been written.
But this book...
...was writing the present.
Suddenly, another line appeared.
Noah looked toward the final page.
Against his own will, Noah’s eyes lifted.
The remaining pages began turning rapidly.
Near the very end, one sheet remained unwritten.
Except for a single sentence glowing in silver ink.
Do not let the Author finish this Chapter alone.
The lights inside the library flickered.
Every other book on the shelves trembled.
Outside, the church bell rang again.
Twice.
Then, somewhere deep beneath Hollow Creek...
A familiar lantern burst into life.
Not silver.
Not golden.
White.
Someone had returned to the Hall of Echoes.
And they were already reading the next Chapter.
