Gold Rush (3)
As Lee Gyeongbok stepped outside, light followed behind him.
"These guys aren't Hired Guns, are they?"
The mercenaries and outlaws in cover.
She frowned as she overlooked the fierce battle at the entrance to the village.
― Huh? What's that supposed to mean?
― Then who are they?
― Sounds like Light's right? There's a lack of consistency here, though.
― For sure, their outfits and even their weapons are all over the place.
― Maybe the gang hired mercenaries too?
The viewers quickly agreed with her. The outlaws' appearance was nothing if not chaotic.
"It looks like, rather than mercenaries, they've enlisted other gangs."
Lee Gyeongbok answered after checking the chat.
Among them, there were some wearing matching outfits.
― Oh! That makes sense.
― Come to think of it, oswald mentioned it too, lol.
― Riiight, didn't he say this isn't the first time he's been attacked?
― Gang alliance? For real!
― No wonder there are so many of them, lol.
― Wait, then this is way tougher than I thought?
― If this is at the Master tier, they'll be swarming all over the place, geez.
The viewers caught on to the situation. Since it was a union of gangs and not just one, the difficulty would be higher than anticipated.
"Our task doesn't change."
Unlike the viewers, Lee Gyeongbok wasn't worried. He immediately drew his revolver and pulled the trigger.
― Oh crap!
― That startled me!
― Hyung!? Where are you shooting at?!
― Why shoot all of a sudden, lol?
The viewers were startled by the sudden gunfire even more so because he wasn't shooting towards the main battle but in a different direction.
Then, they saw a '+' icon flash on the screen, indicating an increase in lawful disposition, which surprised them again.
"Damn!"
"How did he know?!"
"Just shoot, anyway!"
At the same time, bullets began flying from the dense trees beyond the wooden shacks.
― What's going on?
― Lol, there was a special squad, huh.
― Tried to hit the flank but failed!
― Of all people, godple was there!
― Lol, a perfect breakwater, nice.
― Went off alone and now they've gone off to their doom, lol.
Most of the bullets were blocked by the wooden shacks. The miners' lodgings were bunched together, making them a maze.
So, in the end, the outlaws had to emerge from the forest.
"Kkek!"
Light didn't miss the opportunity. An arrow she fired hit an outlaw squarely.
"There are still miners who haven't escaped!"
At her shout, Lee Gyeongbok nodded in reply.
'One around the corner, another up above.'
The maze-like quarters also blocked Lee Gyeongbok and Light's line of sight. However, the spread-out divine energy tracked the outlaws' movements, so the outlaws died as soon as they encountered Lee Gyeongbok.
― Can't even last a second, lol.
― Told you, meeting him means instant death.
― That's the shot-to-kill style for you.
― Wow, light's seriously amazing too.
― I guess the strength stat really does matter for archers!
Meanwhile, light-nimbly climbed onto a roof and sniped more outlaws coming over with her bow.
But even so, the number of outlaws was overwhelming.
'No chance to reload.'
The revolver had 6 rounds, and the bolt-action rifle needed to be reloaded after each shot, so Lee Gyeongbok slung the rifle over his shoulder and used only the revolver.
He ducked into the nearest shack to avoid an outlaw he encountered before reloading was finished.
"U-ugh, aaah!"
A miner hiding on the floor screamed in shock.
"Stay down!"
Lee Gyeongbok barked the order and leapt through the window. An outlaw coming from the other side was sent sprawling by his kick.
He used his momentum to crush the outlaw's neck with his knee. As the guy choked, Lee Gyeongbok wrested the revolver from his hand and aimed through the window.
"You bastard...urk!"
Another outlaw, confidently pursuing him, was gunned down by the shot. Lee Gyeongbok spun around and pulled the trigger again.
The rushing outlaw dropped, headfirst.
"This is easier."
As he spoke, the chat buzzed with excitement.
― Wow, instant decision making!
― Why reload, when there's so many already-loaded revolvers lying around, lol.
― LOL, is this just Black Company instinct now?
― Now outlaws are just walking bullets to him!
Lee Gyeongbok chuckled at that. But the brief respite didn't last long.
"Ah, no!"
At the sound of a scream, he moved immediately. Through the window, he could see a miner with hands up, eyes squeezed shut.
Lee Gyeongbok couldn't see the outlaw in front of him, but fired anyway.
With a gunshot, the bullet tore through the gap between the planks.
Even if it lost some speed, it was more than enough to drop the intended target behind the boards.
-????
― Why did that guy die?
― Wait, huh?
― He didn't even have the angle?!
― Don't tell me it went through that tiny gap?
The viewers were bewildered by the result.
"Hide under the bed!"
A beat later, Lee Gyeongbok rolled through the window and shouted. The miner scrambled to follow orders.
As he rolled, Lee Gyeongbok snatched another revolver from a dead body.
'Four shots, plenty.'
Dropping to one knee naturally, he crossed his arms and fired both revolvers with perfect precision.
― Lol, shot after shot, always a kill!
― How does he even know they're behind the wall?
― It's amazing that he can shoot through the gaps, lol.
― WA! Gun Kata!
― Godple-style gunplay is insane, seriously.
Four thuds were heard from behind the wall. Lee Gyeongbok tossed aside the empty guns and spoke.
"If you follow the light, you can see."
That was all the explanation needed.
― Oh! He checks where the light comes through the gaps?
― Yeah, if an outlaw's there, the light doesn't come in!
― Wait, you can actually see that?
― How's he processing all of that in this mess?
― Eyes! Look at those eyes!
― I thought it was listening, but maybe it's both for Godple!
Even as the viewers came to realizations, Lee Gyeongbok didn't stop. Though his hands were now empty, it didn't matter.
"Here...! Kkek!"
An outlaw who spotted Lee Gyeongbok shouted and aimed, but Lee Gyeongbok vanished from sight in an instant.
He'd used both walls as springboards to leap forward, landing a punch full of momentum on the outlaw.
― WA! Falcon Punch!
― That punch sounded so satisfying!
― Great impact, huh?
Before he could grab a gun, another outlaw appeared, but Lee Gyeongbok was relaxed.
He looked at the aimed gun and casually shifted his foot.
A bang echoed out, and a revolver spun into the air, sparks flying off metal.
The revolver, hit by a bullet, rotated midair and landed in Lee Gyeongbok's hand.
Seeing the outlaw's dumbfounded expression, Lee Gyeongbok spun the gun and fired.
-?????????????
― What the heck?!
― My mind just froze for a second, lol.
― Crazy! The other guy shot first,
― Did he really block a bullet with a gun and counterattack?!
― Unrealistic gameplay in a hyper-realistic game, lol.
― LOL, who told him to get so immersed in Roc&Roll?
― It's definitely a game, right?
Chat was filled with shock and awe.
"Did you take care of all of them yourself?"
Light jumped down from the roof. Lee Gyeongbok answered with a nod.
No outlaws remained in the area. The special squad was completely dealt with.
"Let's regroup with the mercenaries."
As soon as Lee Gyeongbok spoke, light followed close behind. But they soon had to switch focus.
"Sheriff?"
Lee Gyeongbok spotted the sheriff, slumped amid the corpses, flinching at their approaching footsteps.
― What's he doing?
― Was he pretending to be dead?
― For real, is he useless or what?
― Why even bother being sheriff if you're this incompetent?
Viewers' complaints poured in.
Lee Gyeongbok took cover beside the sheriff and questioned him.
"What are you doing right now?"
"Are you really a sheriff acting like this?!"
"I-I... I'm sorry."
Light pressed him, and the sheriff trembled, tears in his eyes.
"I-I can't do anything! If I'm not careful, I might shoot someone else...!"
"What? You..."
He rambled, apologizing and making excuses. Light grew angrier, but Lee Gyeongbok stopped her.
"If you can't fight, run."
"What?"
His words puzzled not just the sheriff, but Light and the viewers as well.
"The quarters are clear now, but there are still miners too scared to escape. Don't run by yourself—lead them to safety."
He wanted the sheriff to round up the terrified miners in the shacks. If the sheriff took the lead, the miners would follow.
"For now, head to the mine. The gang's after the company's gold bars, so they won't go inside."
"Lead them into the mine..."
The sheriff mulled over Lee Gyeongbok's words, and as he received a mission, some courage showed in his eyes.
"What are you waiting for?! Move!"
"Y-yes! Understood!"
With Light's final push, the sheriff scrambled up and ran. Lee Gyeongbok and Light covered the entrance with suppressive fire to buy time.
― At least he's not being useless to the end.
― If he'd stalled, we would've lost it.
― Wow, godple even thinks about the miners.
― Seriously, I'd have ignored them and just fought alone.
― Trooper's about surviving, not fighting, lol.
― Is this the Eldest?
― Lol, I barely have time to save myself!
Viewers were pleased with his approach. The mercenaries, despite casualties, had reduced the outlaws' numbers quickly.
― Should be a smooth finish at this rate.
― If Godple and Light hadn't taken out the special squad, this would've been brutal.
― I think they killed over 20 between the two of them.
― If those guys had flanked from the side, it would've been over for sure.
― Even Old Man Won would agree on this one.
― Lol, is this a Western-style pork wrap or what?
― That's why he's Godple.
With the tide turning, viewers relaxed. Victory was all but assured.
But things didn't go so smoothly.
'This is...?'
As Lee Gyeongbok and Light advanced downhill, his expression hardened.
An abnormal threat, picked up by divine energy.
Even if you combined the threat level of all the outlaws so far, it didn't compare.
Once its form became clear in his mind, Lee Gyeongbok grabbed Light.
"Alex?"
"This way!"
He took her and changed direction before the viewers had time to ask questions.
"It—it's a Gatling gun!"
"They have a Gatling gun!"
"What? Gatling?"
"How'd a gang get a military weapon?!"
"This is insane!"
A scream of terror came from the mercenaries' direction. Then a Gatling gun appeared below the slope, its barrels spinning wildly.
"R-run!"
"Take cover!"
Flashes erupted from the spinning barrels, and in their path, mercenaries dropped like flies.
Lee Gyeongbok and Light, having escaped early, survived the slaughter.
"What the hell...!?"
Light's eyes shook. The viewers felt the same way.
― How does a gang have a Gatling gun?!
― Not just any Gatling, it's been modified too.
― Did they cover it with iron plates to stop snipers?
― Lol, this is basically a tank now.
― The mercenaries are ex-military, but they're running, lol.
The mercenaries lost their will to fight and abandoned the line, only to get gunned down while fleeing.
"Even their own? This is insane!"
Light glared in anger.
The victims weren't just mercenaries. Outlaws caught in the line of fire also fell.
"Man, this thing is a beast! Anyone else want to die, just step right up!"
The gunner shouted gleefully.
Light flinched.
"That voice... Johnny?"
"You know him?"
"He's a Hired Gun. Big guy they call 'Big Guy.'"
A character with a nickname had appeared.
Lee Gyeongbok and the viewers figured out what was happening.
― Is he the chapter boss now?
― Difficulty just shot up, huh.
― Current Hired Guns show up and it's instantly harder, lol.
― Yeah, how do you fight a Gatling reinforced with steel?
― Guess the only choice is to hold out?
― But there's still more than 20 minutes left?
― Even at Master tier, isn't it early for the boss?
As the chat kept coming, Lee Gyeongbok looked sheepishly at the screen.
"I get the feeling this is happening because we took out the outlaws too quickly."
― Oh? Could that really be it?
― Lol, that makes sense.
― Because they turned the situation around so fast, the boss showed up early, lol.
― So he's too good and now it's harder.
― For now, let's just focus on surviving!
― Wait and defend, like always.
Lee Gyeongbok shook his head slightly at the chat.
"No, we should capture him. Since he's with the gang, he'll be an important clue. Depending on his backup, he might just flee."
It's not like this game's AI is anything short of impressive. There's no guarantee he'll just stick around when reinforcements come.
So it was best to act beforehand.
― You're not just going to kill the boss, but capture him?
― Hyung? How're you gonna do that!
― Is this for real?!
― Just poking your head out would get you riddled!
― Godple's forming a squad too?
― But there are still outlaws trailing from behind...
Viewers were skeptical.
"Yes. I think we can capture him and turn the tide too."
As question marks filled the chat, Lee Gyeongbok jerked his chin as if to point.
"Since we're going to capture him, might as well use that Gatling gun too."
He was planning to not just capture the boss, but steal the Gatling gun. Considering what he'd just seen, it wouldn't be hard to turn the tide afterward.
― What?!
― A Black Company way of thinking!
-???: Their way of thinking is just different from ours.
-???: Why pay for it when you can just steal it?
― LOL, this is how real outlaws do it.
― Just how far did that opening quote foreshadow things, lol.
― Yeah, he's been using all those dropped revolvers, why not take the Gatling too?
The viewers, at first baffled, quickly grew excited.
― If this works out, it'll be amazing.
― Of all people, if it's Godple, he'll pull it off!
― Let Godple do whatever he wants—no, please do it!
What Lee Gyeongbok wanted, the viewers wanted too.
― This is the golden chance for maximum hype.
― Everything gets swept up and used, on!
― This'll be the most refreshing moment yet.
― It's gonna feel so cool, lol.
― Let's be real: no one can resist a Gatling gun rampage!
Just the thought of such a scene was enough to make everyone excited.
