Chapter 279 279: Shido Tawawa War (Part 2)

January 1st, 1:30 PM.
"Fuaaah..."
Disguised as Shiori, Shido stood behind the shrine hall, holding a broom in one hand while covering his mouth with the other as he yawned.
"So sleepy..."
Even for Shido himself, the languid look of the "girl" was extremely alluring.
But today, he really wasn't in great shape.
To help with Nia's capture, everyone had stayed up for two nights straight drawing doujinshi. On top of that, he had spent last night staying up to watch over Nia while she was being treated.
He had barely rested at all.
"Come to think of it... Nia said something earlier, didn't she..."
When he had left the room, Nia seemed to have said something to him and Mikoto, but what had it been?
Back then, he had been on the verge of falling asleep. In order not to let Mikoto and the others notice how tired he was, and also to wake himself up a little, he had slipped outside.
Now that he thought back on it, he really hadn't paid attention to a single word they were saying.
"I think it was... kagami mochi?"
(Maybe she wanted to eat kagami mochi?)
That was what Shido concluded.
"Ah, Shido?"
At that moment, a familiar voice called out from behind him.
____________
A few minutes earlier.
"So what kind of chest does Shido like? Ugh... now that I think about it, I have absolutely no idea what kind of figure he prefers in a girl."
As she walked out of the break room, Mikoto muttered to herself.
Although she personally thought Shido should be interested in girls's breasts like most high school boys...
(I can't deny the possibility that Shido might actually have a lolicon side.) (TL:ehem...Shido did folded to loli a lot)
That thought made her uneasy.
"Ugh... now I'm really curious..."
Mikoto's own figure certainly wasn't bad...
(But if it's not Shido's strike zone, then that means it doesn't matter at all.)
She was just sighing over that when she noticed Shido standing alone in the open space behind the shrine hall, apparently spacing out.
"Ah, Shido?"
So she walked over to him.
"Yakumo-senpai."
Shido turned around and saw Mikoto in an ordinary shrine maiden outfit, having already taken off her celestial crown and chihaya.
"What are you thinking about out here by yourself?"
Although the Spirits were all resting at the moment, Reine and Ratatoskr's staff had stepped in to help as shrine maidens too, so everyone had finally gotten a little breathing room.
Even so, seeing Shido standing alone behind the shrine hall felt strange somehow.
She really did feel like he seemed off today.
"No, it's nothing... Right, since we've got some free time... senpai, want to play hanetsuki1?"
Shido thought for a moment before asking.
"Hanetsuki? I want to, I want to. I've never played it before."
Mikoto nodded obediently.
"All right, then..."
So Shido went inside the shrine and found a battledore paddle, a shuttlecock, some ink, and a brush.
Since it was New Year's, all of those game items had already been prepared in Mikoto's house for everyone to use.
"Shido... that brush and ink are..."
Mikoto tilted her head.
Hanetsuki was basically a game similar to badminton, but the brush and ink...
She closed her eyes and searched through Tsukuyomi's memories.
Then—
"Could it be...?"
"That's right. Exactly that kind of 'could it be.' The loser gets their face painted!"
Shido said with a smug grin.
"Ugh... Shido is so sly."
Mikoto puffed out her cheeks, but she still accepted the paddle.
"Then... begin!"
Smack!
With Shido's shout, the decorated shuttlecock flew into the air.
"Ahwahwah..."
Since she had never played this kind of game before, Mikoto fumbled trying to hit it back.
And failed.
"All right, then. Punishment, punishment."
Shido said with a wicked grin as he picked up the ink.
"Ehehe... I'm getting bullied by Shido."
Mikoto smiled obediently and moved closer, standing beside Shido like a meek little prey animal.
(This is bad. Senpai is way too cute like this.)
Looking at Mikoto acting all docile and compliant like a small animal, Shido could feel his heart start pounding faster.
And so, he drew a tiny streak of ink on her face.
"Then my turn to serve. Here goes!"
Smack!
"Heh heh, too naive."
Smack!
"Uwee?"
Another ink streak.
"So merciless, Shido."
After losing five or six times in a row, Mikoto, whose face now had ink marks like little cat whiskers, said sulkily.
"That's because senpai is way too naive, haha."
Shido said proudly.
"In that case... behold my special move!"
"Heh heh, bring it on!"
"Secret Art! Roaring Flash Blast Wave!"
Smack!
"Pffft—!"
The moment Mikoto shouted that out so boldly, Shido instantly burst out laughing.
"Ehehe, V!"
Without question, this round belonged to Mikoto.
"That's too unfair, senpai!"
Shido cried, half laughing.
"Hmhmhm, serves you right for not showing mercy to a maiden. Now then, punishment, punishment."
Mikoto said with a grin as she picked up the brush.
"I'm going to draw a matching umbrella on Shido's face."
"Eh? W-wait?"
Hearing that, Shido panicked and stepped back.
"Ah! No fair, don't run!"
But Mikoto closed in on him and lightly began painting on his face.
At such close range, he could smell the pleasant scent coming off her, and feel that soft, warm closeness.
(Eh? Soft?)
When Shido looked down, he realized that while drawing on his face, Mikoto had unconsciously pressed her chest against him.
"S-senpai... your chest... is touching me."
"Eh? Ah!"
Hearing that, Mikoto looked down and let out a tiny yelp.
"Ecchi, Shido."
"Ugh..."
And so, when Shido found himself playing hanetsuki with Mikoto again after that, he realized he simply could not keep his focus on the game anymore.
Especially when Mikoto was the one serving.
(Ugh...)
The way her soft chest swayed with each movement seized all of Shido's attention.
"Ehehe, matching umbrella complete."
In the end, after losing who knew how many rounds in a row, Shido wound up with a full matching-umbrella doodle drawn on his face by Mikoto.
"Senpai... that's too unfair..."
(Using honey traps is cheating...)
Although Mikoto herself clearly hadn't realized it, the way her chest bounced while playing was absolutely fatal for a boy Shido's age.
"Hmph... your eyes were very ecchi, you know."
Mikoto said with a sly smile.
"Pff! Y-Yakumo-senpai noticed?"
Shido jumped in fright.
"Well, girls are very sensitive to that kind of gaze."
Mikoto lowered her head shyly.
"Ugh... um, sorry..."
Shido scratched his cheek awkwardly, full of shame.
"You don't have to apologize. Rather..."
Mikoto rose on her toes and whispered into his ear:
"If it's Shido, then staring is fine." (TL:*Rolling on the floor*)
After realizing that, to Shido, her chest really did have quite a lot of appeal, Mikoto's good mood got the better of her and she ended up saying something rather bold.
(!!!)
For Shido, hearing those overly seductive words made his head feel like it had melted, filling him with a syrupy, blissful sweetness.
a Japanese traditional game, similar to racket games like badminton but without a net, played with a rectangular wooden paddle called a hagoita and a brightly coloured shuttlecock, called a hane.
